Default warming up period on my97 turbo

Hi all
Should be picking my catalunya up tomorrow. How long do you need to wait from cold before serious driving, i.e. when the temp gauge registers normal how long after this will the oil have properly warmed up and be lubricating the turbo etc.

Thanks in advance
Nick

I normally give my scoob atleast 5 miles before getting above the 2.5k rpm mark (normally keep her under 3 for that time), there are a few factors though to consider, oil viscosity is possably the biggest, a thicker oil takes longer to warm up, too thin an oil will warm up very quickly but wont dissapate the heat.
Still, use the 5 mile mark as a starting point

It's got to be based on time not mileage, don't you think? If you live in London 5 miles of morning traffic could take 15-20 minutes -- the car will be warm well before than...

Mine takes 9 miles or about 12 minutes on a cold morning to reach normal oil operating temp! That's starting to work at 5am! I keep it under 3000 rpm until warmed up.

You could fit an oil temp gauge and see when it's warmed up.

Thanks folks. I think an oil gauge will be one of the first mods. I tend to get a bit obsessive about these things so a gauge should help.

Well, I've got an MY00 and when dead cold I let it idle until the needle is at least on the bottom measurement - takes upto 3 mins in very cold weather. Have an oil temp gauge that measures in Farenheit and it doesn't go over 3K until at 150 and normal operation is about 180-200.
