Default Up Pipe blown...

Had the dealer look at my noisy exhaust this afternoon, and they say the "up pipe" (from the manifold to the turbo) is leaking somewhere behind the heatshield. I gather there is some sort of flexible coupling lurking behind the shield, bit I can't see the actual fault without complete disassembly. Anybody got a piccy, by any chance?
Anyone else had this problem?

To get the pipe replaced is going to cost 300+ quid. Would there be any advantage on a 99MY RB5 in going to an aftermarket up pipe (e.g. Hayward & Scott)?

Maybe I should go for an equal length manifold instead?

Here's a piccie of a leaky one from my old car - it fell into two pieces as I took it off.
The two sections are meant to slide against each other to cope with expansion, but with a bit of corrosion, they disintegrate and the exhaust leak will be down this sleeve.

I assume the £300 includes labour?

Aah, right. Thanks for the photo, Nick. It explains why the leak lessens when the pipe gets hot and the internals expand.

Price was 151+VAT for the pipe and 120+VAT labour estimate (2 hours). He did warn me that dismantling exhaust systems that are rusted together can be a right pig. Snapped studs and all that. So the labour could be less, or ir could be quite a bit more!

I don't want to be a pessimist, but I reckon 2 hours is pretty quick. I'd be inclined to try and get a fixed price even if it means going to a dealer.

£60 an hour!!!

you'd be better getting said H&S uppipe and going to Scoobyclinic in Midlands, or Rally Colin in Reading, or API Engines (not sure location) or Xtremescoobies etc..

from experiance get work done at a dealer that is not routine servicing and it is cha ching time!! well so is servicing but you know what I mean

My Up-pipe was blowing a while back....

Scooby Clinic was an option, but after i added the petrol money it worked out cheeper to go to XtreemeScoobie's...

H&S Uppipe + All the gaskits were changed cost £300...but made a huge difference...and was very happy with the speed the work was done..
