Default Another guess that noise thread....

With the car running (dont know if this is just when hot or not) if i crouch down by the front wheels of the car (so that you can hear the engine) i can hear a tapping sound.

It sounds like tappets/injectors (i can hear them when i lift the bonnet) but should they be so prominant (sp??) then as well. (i suppose maybe because its a flat 4)

Opinions please gents

Does it do it when it's hot or only when it's cold ? Any excessive oil usage ?

A lot of Scoobs slap a bit when they are cold, providing it goes away when the engine is warm it won't be doing any harm, and money spent on fixing it would only be sorting that noise, often only temporarily. Generally speaking it doesn't develop into anything worse, it doesn't cause any problems, and even if it does get worse, it's not going to lead to a catastrophic failure, or cost any more to fix than it will just now, so you are probably best off to just accept it. A lot of re-built engines with Cosworth pistons slap when they are cold too, and it's been suggested that the slightly slappy engines produce more power because the looser fitting pistons run with less friction once they are warmed up.

My car slaps a bit when it's cold most mornings, general consensus seems to be the above, so I've stopped worrying about it.
