Rear Wheel bearings 170 or 300 quid per side
Have just had rear noise and 2 tone hum diagnosed as wheel bearing failure and was quoted 300 per side at a dealer. Another garage, which used to be but is no longer a main dealer can do the job for 170 per side.
Does anyone know what could cause such a price difference?
All thoughts very welcome.

£300 is a con and Hell £170 a side. Hell ill do the whole job for that and still make a profit .Thats feckin ridiculous. I bet a bearing specialist would charge £30 per bearing then say £20 for use of a press to push old out and new in

Make sure it is the wheel bearings because my tires when they get swapped from the front to the back make a similar noise. So would be nothing to worry about.

Bearings in my old Corrado were 11.99 for both sides. Did them myself in 2 hours. A mechanic with access to a press should have it done in under 1hr. Get prices from motor factors (Andrew Page etc) for the parts.

I was quoted £115 inc vat and 3x£8 oil seals JUST for the bearing (by a Subaru specialist). Went to my local friendly motorfactor and got the complete bearing plus 3 seals for £38 total!
Gonna get it fitted for £60 labour plus VAT at a Subaru specialist

About £40 per kit is about right from a factors, although it probably won't have a new driveshaft nut, I reused the old ones though.
You can do it youself though. You dont need a press for the bearing if you have access to a large vice.
Good luck with the hand brake shoes though, they are a pain in the ****...
