Default Forge VTA MY00 - Problem ?

Just purchased a 2nd hand Forge VTA for a MY00 Classic. Fitted it this evening and triple checked all the fittings etc....and everything was good. So I found some empty country roads to test it out. The car picked up well and boosted fine but when i changed up there appeared to be no Dumping sound ? I varied the rev range but still nothing Pulled across jumped and checked the hoses etc and that the d/v was connected properly and all was fine?

I did at this time hold my hand over the VTA and rev the car using the throttle linkage. I soon found that I had to rev the car rather hard to get it to Vent any air......however if I did push the revs quite high then I could feel the air being venter but only slightly. During this time I had no idling issues and the car drove fine. Anyway got him removed the VTA and took it apart.....this is what it looks like inside.

Can anyone please confirm whether this looks correct ? I seem to recall reading posts that mentioned different colour springs etc.....this one appears to be a standard silver colour ?

Any help would be most appreciated

Thanks for your reply Paul - the spring you can see in the photo was attached to the black plastic (its attached to in the photo) when I took it apart. When I do push the Valve together I can certainly feel a lot of tension from the spring....but hte spring to me doesn't look like any particular colour ?? i.e not blue or red etc. Another point I'd like to clarify is should the spring be free within the valve so to speak ? What I mean to say is should the spring not be attached to anything ? Sorry if I sound a bit naive

thats ok mate,i mean the blue thing sticking out of the top half of the dumpvalve, the bit on the right in your pics, the blue looking bit shouldnt be stuck in the silver part, pull it out and a spring should be behind there, lube it all up when u put it back together

You're a star mate - I shall take it all apart and lube it up as you say - I assume some grease will do the job ?

Any ideas what colour spring I can expect to see ?

If you make the spring too weak in the pursuit of noises and flames, you could end up with it opening when you don't want it to and screwing idle and cruise fuelling, plus venting your part throttle boost that makes a Subaru feel nice.

How will you know if it opens when you don't want it to?

VTAs on MAF based cars belong in the bin

My first new spring was to weak and vented on part lifts,u get a hissing noise from the dumpvalve and the car lurches a bit,but with a slightly firmer one it dumps properly and doesnt go off at the slightest lift of the throttle.
I've never had a standard dumpvalve on my car so i wouldnt know what it's like with a recirc, any idea on how much they are?? i do like to experiment with these things lol

What I'm getting at though is that it may well be venting in low load conditions and you might not hear it but it could mess up your fuelling.

With the OEM recirc it is nice and smooth, and still makes a little noise if you have an induction kit. You could get one from Grade A or similar I'm sure, or some VTA modder will give you their unused one
