Default Q. for Drivetrain experts and those with Decat'd cars

Hi all,

I'm getting in early with this question out of interest (and to plan a budget) Like most scooby owners, I've been tempted to tinker with my Scooby in the quest of *Tim Allen voice* More power!! I've already replaced the peashooters on my classic, predominantly because I wanted to give Scooby his voice back! A H&S backbox certainly done the trick!

During the course of discussing backboxes etc.. I've heard many people say that a classic really deserves a decat centre and downpipe to make it sound great and liberate the bhp that is strangled by the cats.

Sounds great, but I *REALLY* don't want to compromise the reliability/drivability of my car. Quite apart from the fact that I love it to bits, it's a long term financial commitment for me and big bills from engine probs would be most unwelcome

My questions are:

Can you decat the exhaust without compromising the reliability/drivability of the car?

Do you need to have the engine re-mapped to take account of the mods?

Are there any monitoring devices that it would be wise to install to keep track of whats going on with the engine: e.g. knocklink, oil pressure/temperature guages etc... Must admit I was thinking of installing the latter anyway.

Would any of you who have De cat'd exhausts be so kind as to share your experiences with me- has it transformed the car for better or worse?

With thanks and best wishes,

Get a knocklink before any mods.. otherwise you will enjoy it too much and the money will go on petrol..

Full makes a big difference but to get the most from it you will need to get a remap...find your local specialist scoob garage and go and have a chat. One thing to bear in mind that I'm only just revisiting is lagging the downpipe before fitting it, unlagged it sounds fantastically fruity but generates much more heat than std down pipe...

Sorry but what is lagging? Is that heat wrap?

Big positive difference in driveability, there is probably a bit more poke at the top end, but the difference is most noticeable in the earlier spool of the turbo and the fact that the car goes harder, earlier in the rev range.

AvalancheS8- Cheers. Is yours remapped as well?

Would running a decat without a remap put extra strain on the cars internals or compromise its longevity?

Best.

used my classic (98my UK turbo) for 30000 miles with a full de-cat (TSL) without any issues at all (60000 miles -> 90000) - agree that a re-map will get the most from it (and you could have the boost lifted at the same time ), but I don't think its 'necessary' imho (assuming a UK here....)

Its done 120000 now, but its had 'quite' a bit more done, including 2 maps (one PE and one Apexi ECU)
