lightened flywheel
hi all i am going to be changing my cluch on my 93 wrx for a ceramic one as it is going to be over the 300 bhp is it worth fitting a lightened flywheel ? if it is what is the best buy at the moment ?

So have I Mickey, get car back today ( and Xtreme Scoobies light front pullies ) and we'll see how it goes.
Other flywheels seem to be very light billet flywheels, aluminium (??) or steel, around 4.5 kg - 6 kg. Std is around 12 kg.
Too light a flywheel may make starting off trickier as the engine may stall if you don't get the clutch bite just right, as less rotating mass to keep it going!

Got the car back tonight, good job well done!
Not a problem pulling away from a stop, with new AP Organic clutch and ASPerformance lightened 8kg ( original ) flywheel work well together,
Gone is the awful judder from the main dealer installed Exedy clutch - they didn't do more than wipe the flywheel over with a stone and the car suffered since.
Need to push it tomorrow to see how it goes on the move...
Sexy Xtreme Scoobies lightweight pullies went on too, so even lighter rotating mass!

mickey...........there are mild variations when they are machined (dependant on the original condition, etc.)...........we always end up 7.5-8.0kgs..............
we are currently using a 'std' lightened flywheel in our own car at under 7kgs but at this weight it is getting a bit marginal i believe...................

Drives nicely and smooth, picks up well, haven't noticed a massive increase in speed but certainly no downsides.
Not stalled it or had problems pulling away so I think it will be fine.
I guessed the weight from general comments made, should be around 7.5 - 8 kg .. didn't weigh it!

You'll have to fit a steel billet flywheel with a ceramic clutch; the ceramic bit rips cast flywheels to shreds in no time at all.

yeah i nearly stalled mine as well when i first got it, but this is like 1 week plus later (after i had got used to it) and i still got caught out
he was in the wrong lane, i knew he was gonna make a move and cut me up, i was planning to pull away as normal then hoof it down the road, the only hoofing down the road i was gonna do was on horseback cos it wouldnt start up asap either
lads at work keep asking why im reving the car more when i go over the speed ramps (cant go over them in 2cnd like i used to without quite a bit more revs)
i am getting grief lol
