MY03 STi Turbo change?
just planning out some mods and was wondering on the general feeling regards swapping the turbo... i know the standard blower isn't much use after 330 bhp interm of throuput and life expectancy.. so a new one needed, for reliable figure of around 35-360bhp what is generaly considered to be the best buy... they APS sr40's look a good bet, anyone got one? or do you experts know of or use a prefered make\model...

I've been pondering this for ages (MY02 STI).
Conrad, what turbo would you recommend ?

I just replaced the standard VF35 with a TD05 18g on a customers car. In conjunction with an uprated TMIC, cold air induction, 3.5" decat exhaust and remap the end result was very good. We actually started be trying to use the VF35 but it crept quite badly with the big exhaust, so it was decided to change the unit seeing as we had to removed it to even port the wastegate.
The difference is very noticable, paticularly at the top end, and on this paticular car we had full boost around 3000rpm, not laggy at all.
The 18g is capable of maxing out the standard injectors (at normal fuel pressure) so just about the ideal choice for a new age STI if you don't want to go mad.

Hi there Paul!
So what you are saying is that with a td05 18g you might get away with not uprating the injectors( the walbro 255l I guess is mandatory)?
How much hp and torque would in your opinion be safe with the td05 18g along with a freeflow exhaust?
Did you port the td05 to avoid the boost-creep like you would on the std VF35?

Also consider the TD05-20G which runs very well on the Sti's.
We had an Sti 02 run 403bhp and 340lb of torque at Dastek last week, full boost of 1.4 bar at 3300rpm. This was running an uprated fuel pump, APS induction, decat and headers. Std intercooler and injectors.

With sti cams and rev limit, 18g vs 20g is a tough call, if in doubt I would say 18g, and for those that want the extra power, but are prepared to work around the issues (if they should even arise at all) then go 20g.
The garrett based units offer more power, low lag (measure by time delay) but quite a high boost threshold RPM (what most people think of as lag).
