Default Turbo sometimes doesn't give full boost

I pulled out of a garage fourcourt today onto a sliproad and floored it and for some reason the turbo was only giving about 3/4 boost. It stayed like this for about 1 mile and then went back to normal. I hope this doesn't mean my turbo is on its way out. Could this be the ECU doing this because the turbo is hot??
I have a turbo timer so I would have thought the turbo should be in good nick.
I have a MY99 UK turbo with 55K on the clock and its always had subaru service every 7500 miles. Any ideas??

Cheers Ali, that could be it, although it wasn't happening in that way. It went on for about 2 mins so I dropped off the power and then it miraculously returned

If it only run 0.5 bar in every gear (8 PSI) without a check engine light, then it is probably responding to knock and your MAF sensor has failed.
