Help! Gear box trouble

Default Help! Gear box trouble

Just had my impreza 94 uk to the subaru garage caus theres a load noise coming from the engine and gear box, they said a bearing has gone in the gear box (rear of it i think he said?) when i asked him how much to fix it he said just the labour its gonna be £700!!! then the parts on top of that!!! does any1 know if ill get it done cheaper anywhere else?

what sort of noise does this make mate i think i have the same problem...

does the noise go louder as you go up a gear

it gets louder and loud the faster you go, then once u get to bout 30mph it should come on. if you tap the gear stick left or right while in gear and moving the noise should get even louder

sounds like same prob i got mate taking it in to garage on sat for them to have a proper look at it.

and i thought it wasnt to bad

im going to take it to a normal garage n see if they`ll do it any cheaper caus subaru are going to be miles more expensive. they said if you want a quick fix you could get some really thick oil for the gear box and that might get rid of the noise. think its best to get fixed properly tho. let me know how much its going to cost you any way

will do mate taking it to father in laws garage so wont be so dear if the box is totally nackered hoping for a sports jobby and clutch in there but dont think the misses is to impressed.

Sounds very much like first motion shaft bearings...Does any of the noise go off if you dip the clutch.....?.

erm... yeah but only a tiny bit. it gets alot louder when i move the gear stick

hi mines doing the same and was told i need new box bearing and aprantly theres 8 so i hope only 1 is worn.

its does mate when i dip clutch

Yep, I am another with a similar "feature" on my car. I was thinking about trying some Slick 50 (or similar) gearbox treatment. What do you guys think of this stuff? Anything else you can recommend?
