Default sti 8 intercooler

well me and jonnygav got it fitted onto my car today(well jonny did ) went on easy no modification to the throttle body, no panel beating to get the intercooler to fit, shortening the clutch resevoir was only a temp measure IMO as i think the proper 02 clutch resevoir will look much better, got a few pics but have to sort somewhere to host them 1st, wasnt too sure on this at 1st but it has actually reduced mu lag over my other TMIC and even though my boost has dropped to 1.5 bar the car is actually quicker and is much more responsive , will know how much better it is once i get a few exhaust leaks sorted and get my car mapped properly

I presume the lower boost is from having a denser charge for the same air flow, as more heat has been removed.
Steve - what car have you done this to ?

Nice job guys, looks the dog's.

Steve, what have you done/plan to do to the bonnet in terms of scoop and undertray to mate up to the new cooler?

Also, are you thinking of wrapping your turbo/refitting a heatshield as I bet there's a fair bit of heat comes up from it?

Question

I have recently upgraded to a TD05 turbo...and the lag from the TD04 was allot less in comparison...

Did the Sti 8 intercooler make that much of a difference to the Lag?

it has to mine at the minute but my other intercooler would be ok after a remap, i still need to have the car mapped to cope with this intercooler as my turbo doesnt come in till over 4000rpm but im thinking the car will be alot quicker with this intercooler

My turbo does not come in till 3500rpm, and that annoys me......but I would have thought that was quite normal for a Td05...

I think I will invest in s STI 8 Intercooler, is it a straight swap for MY98?

How much should I be expecting pay?

its not a straight swap, and requires a bit hammering of the brackets and shortening the clutch resevoir

im not too sure if jonny was saying it was much harder to fit one on your year car, as jonny says he cant fit one on his car due to space

dont know what your id meter has to do with this tmic i comfortably ran my other intercooler at 1.6 bar with a td05 trbo, and until i changed my last intercooler ran my td05/06 at similar boost , acceleration and bhp dont go hand in hand

steve, the peak presure was 1.5 bar when i was out with you the other day, it dropped down to 1.2 straight after, that makes sence as you are running a safe map.

when you get your new map done with bigger injectors it should hold more like 1.35 bar with more advance.

it should be good fun

just had to do some modification to the brackets etc, when starting the engine or when the engine was stuttering it was causing the intercooler "y" piece to hit the bulk head(maybe a samco pipe might cure this????) luckily i had the intercooler lift kit i purchased from scooby si which then managed to lift the "y" piece a bit further up from the bulk head and a bit futher hammering on the right hand side bracket would be nice if there was a proper custom made one as it would hold the intercooler more solid and this would eliminate the banging on the bulk head

Just in the process of doing this to my MY98, chopped off the dump valve mounting too to make it easier.
Also got hold of a VF30 I was thinking of putting on at the same time coupled to an open neck downpipe.
Currently running about 260bhp with 16psi of boost, any ideas what I might end up with?

Dave
