Default WRC whine noise

went to a local rally here in Jamaica and found that some of our cars sound exactly like the WRC cars. i found it was only the cars which were rally set-up made a 'whiney' sound i cant figure what that noise is. do any of you? i dont think its the turbo as it doesn't sound like it.

Most of the noticeable constant whine is from the moulded slick tyres. Its from the constant compression and release of air within the grooves on the tyre footprint. I get it on my car when running trackdays.

If its flipper the dolphin noises then its wasegate chatter.

If its high pitched whine in line with the speed of the car then its the gears or as above. Mark, interesting one on the tyres, not heard of that before. Guess you wouldn't get it on gravel.

wastegates don't whine, dog engagement teeth don't whine, they are either engaged or not!

What you can hear as stated above is straight cut gears. Tyres can add to this as stated, but I would very much doubt you could hear that from outside the car over the sound of the gearbox.

Adam, I think you need a trip to a tarmac rally soon to have a listen!
