strange noise when on the move. WTF is it?
only tend to pick it up when driving slowly (after that i can't hear it over the exhaust)
a sort of dry rotating noise. doesn't get louder and i've had it for ages. sort of makes the noise in line with the rotation of the wheels.
obviously not much to go on, but any ideas?
anything i can check myself before i throw myself to the mercy of the dealers?

doesn't make any additional noise either.
just sounds like something needs a damn good greasing/oiling

Do you have grooved discs ? or standard as the grooved are quite bad for this at low speed, Brake pad manufacturers have now started making pads with beveled leading edges to reduce noise .

cheers guys. brake pads rubbing would seem a logical explanation, i haven't tried braking and listening for the noise, the noise is when i'm rolling along, but i guess light skimming of pad to disc is the culprit.
will see if the magic caliper cleaner does the trick on friday

sorry guys, service didn't turn up anything strange, dealer commented on brakes being worn (apparently) but didn't say anything else was up.
if it's wheel bearings won't the sound get louder as it wears more?

the noise mystery continues...
If this starnge noise we are getting was indeed a wheel bearing then it would almost definately get worse with speed...I put the car up on a 2 poster ramp and sped up the wheels,,,no wheel bearing noise but once put again back on the floor the sodding noise was still there....whats left?? suspension?? I cant see it though as is is definately a rotating noise,,,my money is on prop shaft yet too bloody scared to ask a dealer for fear of the worse!!

I did try the car with the wheels of the floor aswell,I even took the discs and calipers off but couldnt hear it.
Oiled a few things ,sprayed grease, put it back and started driving, and the noise was still there.
I didnt check the diff centre bearing though but it seems to come from the back as opposed to the centre of the car.
Next step is to take the seats out and let someone else drive it so I can listen with a stephescope(sp) through the boot floor (or without one).
It seems that the noise only comes when there is a load on the bearings.
Im hoping its not the diff or gearbox, but I might just go with hoskib's idea of leaving it untill it breaks/gets worse.
At least I will deffinately know what it is(was).
Please update if you find the problem (ie if you break down before me)

Its not the Indicator for low brake pads is it. ??. If pads are getting low (not worn out ) theres a piece of steel that catches on edge of Disc to give Audible sound that things are getting to the point of changing.
Just an idea , or shall i get me coat and go stand in the corner with silly lookin hat on.
Dohhhhhhh.

hoskib,
Is it a kind of ticky/ rattly heat shield noise that doesn't speed up/slow down? Can you drive around the noise eg dip clutch or feather throttle? Does it only happen once drivetrain/ engine warm etc and mainly in 2nd,3rd+4rth?
