Question Calling all racers: need your thoughts!

Back hill climbing today at Shelsley Walsh.
Xmas plan for the Sti v3 is to fit the Gruppe s headers, AndyF turbo, 550cc with Walbro and ApexiFC/map from Andy(= about 360 bhp ish?)

Had difficulty getting startline grip today and lit-up the inside tyres on 2 bends also....

Really need some Avon slicks, but with even today's 314 bhp/280 torque I recon the box will give in. So:

1 modify the engine as above to improve times
2 fit 6 speed trans and slicks to improve times?

Both cost the same. And I can only afford one option.

What would you do to get a better hill climb time? (apart from change the driver...)

You really have to go with option 2 or the new engine will just break things and without traction you may just burn more rubber.
Instead of the heavy 6sp I'd consider a gear kit for the 5sp with longer ratios.

if you are lighting up inside tyres, consider better diffs. the Sti plated rear diff can be shimmed to increase it's locking, and an ATB front may help on tarmac.

I wouldn't go with longer (than sti) ratios myself.

I would have thought that shorter ratios are needed for quicker acceleration up hill,no?

The six speed from the sti7> are meant to be stronger aswell as provide you with the shorter ratios.You could shed a few pounds by going to the toilet before a race,this would compensate for the heavier 6 speed.

It might help a little more if you can reduce the weight of the wheels (more money to blow)

All IMO of course so I could be talking sh1te.

that would be one hell of a dump to offset the extra weight of the 6 speed!

Try going up Shelsley Walsh fast...you will dump a lot more than 25Kg.
Came second in the class behind an EVO5 with 460 ish on board. He reconed the power first, and he might be right (big sigh from Andy).
He ran crappy AVS Yoko's today, and came in 1.3 secs shy of his best on Dunlop d7's (semi slicks). I thought the difference would have been greater, but he was down on boost too!
The 4 standing starts this weekend were very hard, and the wheelspin in the two lower-hill bends reduced when I put the tyre pressures from 30 all round to the usual 35 psi.
I cut 0.6 sec off my first timed run as a result.
Adding 25 kg to the car with the 6 speeder is a lot to find elsewhere other than gut the car to the bone:raz:

Andy, I really want to go your route. For the result and the interest too; the standing start is not the be all and end all of a hill climb.

Pavlo, if I could find a JDM Sti with 'limited slip diffs' that would do the trick?
Andy, the gear set would be £4K ish, a 6 Speeder 'kit' about 2K, so for 4K I could do the motor, trans and slicks, Right?

It's only money..............

There were 3 Street Rods at Shelsley, just as i used to build and drag race, oh! the temptation.

If you can lay your hands on an Sti 5/6 gearbox then that will cope with the extra power, ratios are not bad either

Was ! for a few weeks and it coped ok until I got my new box (no, its not for sale !)

I hought that the V3 box was the start of the improved boxes right to the new age '6 Speeders'....
Had thought of a type R box as these have shorter ratios to the Sti v3 but not as short as the RA.
With loosing grip in the bends i wondered if i eased off the rear roll bar a 'hole' then the rear would stay on the ground.
Racing hard again for Championship points again this weekend so will try.

I'm surprised you all aren't telling me to fit a 6 speeder from an Sti JDM, 4 short and 2 long ratios.

Well done Andy on 502 bhp. It is refreshing to see accurate bhp rating instead of the 'It's got 350 bhp' Why always round figures!

That's cheap!
In normal term a £ = $ is a good rule of thumb, so about £1500 + labour £££
Thanks Andy (still fancy the Apexi/turbo etc.) You are getting huge good press for this 'standard' tuning package, why don't you offer an Apexi fc+TD05 20g+ 550/walbro/FPR, mapping session?
Drive it in, drive it out (faster) deal?

911, its the UK 6 spd which has the 4 short and two long gears, the JDM is close ratio all the way . Since fitting mine (JDM) the car is only running 0.6 bar (not finished the mapping yet) but she sure isn't slow. With the close ratio box you just keep throwing gears at it! (and it would still pull over 170 if you could rev it out in top, 7500 redline on my car).

911, The Version 3 still has the TY752 type box which is the old , weaker one. TY754 came out with version 4 cars.

I have a plated front diff spare from either of those 2 boxes. It's set pretty tight [- as Japs tend to do ] but could be loosened off to give more traction at the front for you. You will have a plated rear diff already and maybe it wants a tighten to help the deal.

Tight front diffs are a PITA as they give all the symptoms of having a DCCD wound full on. [ Hopping skipping clicking etc etc ] but set carefully they can be a great help.

I would reckon that a 6 speeder is a LOT MORE heavy than plus 25Kg to a 5 speeder. I can walk carrying a 5 speed I can barely lift a 6 speed.

I guess the gaskets are doing the trick for you then??

The gaskets held together at Shelsley Walsh on a very hot day, Optimax with gallons of NF and some stiff competition. L o n g full bore @7000 rpm straight and blood and gore all the way up!

Really pleased with your work, can thrash the ar*e off it again!

I will check my Box numbers on my 5 speeder, I might have some luck and have a V4 in there.

Can you pm me on a price delivered on a pallet of a 6 Speed JDM 'kit', non dccd?
Really don't want to do all the diff thing, but price that to me too but for you to assemble the units in the box/diff please.(I'm getting good/quick at removing boxes now). You sure about Stiv3 have plated diffs? I thought mine was viscous and Sti RA's were plated?

Yes they are arn't they.
The silver one has 700 bhp AT THE WHEELS and weight just 1000Kg. It actually used to be faster!
There is a real danger that the Audi's will be in our class next year.....
You should have come and said hello, mind you, there were some killer cars there weren't there?

At least you see what I'm up against!
