STI V5 or 6 TMIC
VF35 turbo
fuel pump and reg
silicone y-piece to intercooler
EcuTek re-map or Apexi power FC (both same price but apexi can come with a cool little hand controller that you can show to people )
Plus what you've already got.
Want a little more, you could do headers and up pipe too.

Looking in to this myself but still unsure if I'm going to risk going for more power.
Looked at
VF34 - £500 ish (Seen one on Ebay for about that) or TDO5 recon for about £600 ish
Hybrid FMIC - £550 ish
Fuel pump and injectors - £500 ish
ECU upgrade - £600 ish
I've already got the TEK software but will have to pay for the "3" license. Some suggestion that TD05 was more reliable than VF series but have no experience with either.
I worked on the basis that the above would giv plenty more than 300hp but I'd limit power to 300hp on the basis that with those mods theres an element of safety/over egging it a bit to improve reliablity of the engine.
As for the 'box lasting at 300hp who knows (mines making some iffy noises hence reluctance to go for more until it decides what to do i.e. carry on/spit gears over M4 etc...)
/edit - Having thought about it the above may be fairly laggy? so perhaps as mentioned stay with STi cooler but perhaps get an STI8 if it fits and a quicker spooling turbo which can cope with 300hp (not sure which though)

Really if you want 300bhp, then limit your mods to 300bhp. It not only saves money, but improves drivability.
You should be able to pick up a TD05 for a lot less than £600 then get in converted to front entry. I picked up a side entry one for about £200 I think.
You can get to 300bhp on a topmount. I take it yours is a classic, in which case you could fit on an sti5 topmount and hoses for cheep. Although a frontmount will definetly give lower temps, and would be good if you planned on sustained high speed runs.
Your my99 440cc injectors are good for 300bhp. Even the earlyer 380's should do it with increased fuel pressure.
When uprating the fuel pump also do the regulator, the standard one will not last with a big pump.
The VF35 is the best turbo for a limit of 300bhp IMHO, however there are now later ones in the vf series which may well be better, i think we're up to about vf39? which would be the twin scroll?
The VF34 and TD05 have larger exh housings than the vf35 so will hold boost right the way to the redline should you want to do that, at the expense of spooling up a bit later in the rev range.
As far as I'm aware the TD05 is a solid little B****** I have no direct comparison with the vf34 though I beleve the spool up is quite similar with the TD05 being slightly better at the top of the rev range. I may be proved wrong on this though.

Agree with RB5-I have a UK97 with TD05 FE, up rated fule pump; fuel cut (standard injectors and top mount) full decat plus Samco's and HKS EVC 5 boost controller and got 300 bhp on a crappy warm day at 1.3.
Put on the lightened pulleys; and induction kit and dialled in a touch more boost and I expect to see this will have increased a bit.
Run booster and have invested in Knocklink and Llambda sensors. Very very reliable thus far and have seen very little knocklink activity. Only downside was I had to invest in AP clutch as it started slipping.

Steve,
You need to be clear exactly what you want. MY99 spec at the moment:
3" turbo back system
Silicon Hoses
Tek3 map
STi Panel Filter
HKS SSQV
It good for about 270/280bhp virtually lag-free. With this setup I ran 13.4secs 1/4mile which was with a slipping clutch...I would hope to get 13.1secs on this setup.
Very reliable setup with no gearbox probs etc. On your current turbo (TD04)you can make just over 290bhp and 300lbs of torque. Theres a link here of how Steven Done made the figures www.steve.ukmail.org/car.
I've decided to aim for around 330bhp with next stage of mods after driving on the setup for ages. My spec to follow includes FE-TD05, Ported headers, 2" up-pipe, tek3, uprated fuel pump, fuel reg, uprated clutch, lightened flywheel (and may have to look into additional cooling)....the setup is good for 330bhp but is overkill to achieve 300bhp.
There is a big difference in cost of going for 280/290bhp and going for 300bhp.

As for cost you could get to around 280bhp with a free flowing exhaust (£250 inc downpipe second hand), panel filter (service item anyway, cheap at £40), and a map (around £700+?).
If you decide to go for the same setup as mine currently is I will be selling my tek3 ECU in a few weeks time.
Basically on the cheap you could do the lot with around £600-£700 (270/280bhp)
