Default De-catting and MOT

How old does your car have to be for de-catting? And, does the insurance go up drastically Whats the scene with MOT?
Does de-catting provide amazing power increase?
Do you hav to go for re-mapping etc as well if you want de-cat?
Sorry for ignorance

car will pass MOT with decat up to 1993.Decat does give extra performance but how much depends on type of car.Remapping isnt necessary but is worth it for peace of mind. This is all in my own personal experience i might ad im sure views will differ.

av just had the centre cat taken of a my 99 and replaced with hayward and scott pipe seems a bit faster. As for mot just have your cat put back on for the test.

As long as it's out of warrentee. Doesn't matter how old/new...although new models do have problems with a "full" decat with boost surge.

And, does the insurance go up drastically
Depends who it's with and if you tell them

Whats the scene with MOT?
Part decat which is removing one of the 2 cats (or 1/2 of the 3 for later models) will still pass MOT without problems. Full decat you haven't got a chance unless you chat up your MOT tester

Do you hav to go for re-mapping etc as well if you want de-cat?
Later models - post 2000? (not quite sure of the dates) may need a re-map. The older classics generally are ok.

Does de-catting provide amazing power increase?
depends on which cat you remove, or if you remove all of them...the more you remove, the more power you get.

A full decat on a classic makes the world of difference, removing just the centre (2nd) cat on a classic gets a "meh" rating from me. The downpipe cat is the one that makes the difference IMO.

If car was made after August 92 it has to take the more stringent emissions test designed for cars with cats.

Doesn't matter if the car actually has the cat or not, it's weather it passes the correct emissions test or not, which is harder for some post 92 cars with no cat, but some will pass.

I think with imports if there is no uk equivelent and it is made before 97 you take the non cat test anyway

Beware!
There are new regulation coming in where the emmissions test result will be linked to a computor in the MoT station. If the result is a fail then the garage cannot print the MoT Certificate, no matter how good your chat-up lines are.
There will soon be no hand written MoT's.
The grip on the (modified) motorist is getting tighter....
