Crunching Gear going to 5th (MY99)
Friend of mine has recently purchased a MY99 turbo wagon. It seems impossible to change from 4th to 5th without a crunch unless doing it very slowly and gently (although it always crunches when over 70mph). The car is standard, has done 92k and has FSSH. Any ideas? Sounds like the syncro? Can this be fixed or is it a new gearbox job? COsts etc appreciated.

Had this problem on my MY99 going from 3rd to 4th. Changed the oil from Redline to Syntrax bought from my local scooby dealer (take a container they have it in bulk) paid around £6 / ltr this basically cured the problem.

It could also be that the synchro ring has "polished up" and may need removal for attention. it simply needs cleaning and its mating surface polished with some "valve cutting paste". Once you have achieved a "matt appearance" on the drive surface, refit and should then be ok again.
it would also be worth checking the 5th gear locking nut on the back of the gear set, just to make sure this has not started to come loose either.
