Default Noisy turbo - time to panic?

The turbo on my sti 5 is making a whiney noise, even when off boost, and I was wondering if any turbo experts could tell me how worried I should be.

It's not mega loud in fact it sounds about the same as a timing belt thats too tight but its defo louder than it should be. When driving it boosts fine and theres not even a hint of smoke. Could it be a bearing or would that make it smokey if that was the problem?

Unfortunately I've no idea what the history of the unit is as I've only recently bought the car but it looks stock from the outside. If it gives up on me I would replace it with an uprated one but my main concern is could it damage the rest of my engine if it lets go in a big way?

Any advice is much appreciated.

just put a thread on as my turbo squeals when the turbo kicks in, as you say. like a timing belt but louder. If any info comes along I'll come back to you and let you know what has been said. If you hear from anybody, can you let me know. Cheers M8

Cheers for the feedback guys, looks like I'm not paranoid then.

Yungjamie - is your's an sti 5 as well? Might be slightly different symptom though as mines noisy even at idle.

Taffyboyo - will do mate.

Likewise if I get it sussed I'll pass the info on.

Cheers

Default turbo problems.

No. mine is a wrx import my95. runs perfectly okay until turbo kicks in around 3500rpm Sounds like 50 cats having a scrap under the bonnet. Have checked the impellers on the turbo also bearing play but that seems fine. I did change the oil recently and I don't know if I have to bleed the oil through the turbo unit
Will try that out anyway. have you changed your oil recently? Is my engine much different to yours? if I get any joy, will come back to you.

Cheers Jamie.

No, I haven't changed the oil recently. It's needing doing actually. Might check the oil feed at the same time as some people on here seem think blockages can cause this sort of thing.

As for the engine I think there are a few differences but not too sure what they are. Pretty sure we're running different turbo's thouh.

Best of luck with it anyway.
