Michael,

Quite a project that, The engine wiring harnesses are different. If you have a complete 98 engine with everything there's a chance that it'll go with an amount of rewiring. If you are short of manifolds and such like it's a much harder job.

The engine will physically fit the car, but all the peripheral stuff is different.

As Mr. God-of-Subaru-Engines says there really mate!

WIring looms will have to be chopped, but then again the idle control valve etc are different. So in theory possible, otherwise a right royal pain in the bottom.

You could swap inlets, but they pipework underneath the inlet also is slightly different.

' God of Subaru Engines ' you really have done something now Jon !!

Sorry to correct you, The inlets won't swap as the early one has inline studs through the centre line of the ports whereas the 98 has staggered studs at diagonals across the port. Equally the early engine has thick head gaskets and the late has thin, so even if you swap heads the inlet manifold stud holes will be out by about 2 mm across the width of the engine as a total.

Oh well I suppose l'll just have to live with my new nickname.

Dear sir,

I though the inlet manifold stud pattern for the MY97/98 and MY93-96 cars were the same Did it not change for the MY99/00 cars?

The block is basicly the same, the heads are different but only internally.
What is different about the loom? Most of the sensors are in the same place!
Would you have to use the early MAF sensor? (Is the plug different?)
Ignition system could still use the separate coils or do they not fit the heads?

I generally use the term for the year following rather than the actual year and as we see so many JDM cars it appears to me at least that there are a number of 1998 cars out there with the later spec heads on. However l am certain that the later manifolds do have a different wiring harness for the engine.

Thanks David

So if the MY 98 engine is a actually a MY98! (UK so pre September)
Is it possible to swap the blocks as long as the original inlet manifold is still used?

What differs in the wiring loom to the block?

I bodge things

No it will, just use your original heads and inlet.

Remember to get the correct headgasket though.

Awaiting Sir to correct me if I am wrong....
