Default Engine longevity ?

I found a nice Impreza GT Turbo, 1996.
Here is the add for it:
http://www.avto.net/rabljena2002/ogl...d=90325&foto=3

I'm going to check it out tomorrow. What I'm worried about is the wear on the engine. It has about 150k miles (214k kilometers) on it.

How long are these engines on average able to last ? What problems can one expect that would be specific to such Imprezas ?

Thanks !

No one knows ?

Ok... let me ask another way - how many miles can the engine take before engine overhaul/rebuild ?

Cruisah,

It's not an easy question to give a specific answer to. It's going to depend on how it's looked after, how it's been driven, and how lucky you are.

Having looked at the link, the car has obviously been modified, and given that lightweight seats, and harnesses have been fitted, it's fair to assume it's been driven hard.

Whilst it's possible it's still on it's original engine, I would think it highly likely, that the engine has either been rebuilt, or replaced at some point, or would be due for one.

TBH, you really need to speak to the seller, and find out what parts have been recently replaced on the car, because even if the engine is good, I'd be concerned about what other parts had done 150k.

Mark.

I checked the car out yesterday. Looks nice, wasnt in any major accident.
It has 214k kilometers on the odometer. Main shaft bearing got shot about 45k km ago and engine was rebuilt. Owner said engine is using some oil, but couldnt tell exact amount (when asked if its like 1L / 1000km, he said its not that much). I also doubt the turbo would be still the original unit. There is some clutch juddering in all gears (does that mean nearly finished clutch?).
Car doesnt smoke blue, white or black. Pulls nicely from 3k RPM onwards.
It has Prodrive suspension (which incidentally needs care about 2x/month - relubrication). Feels very good on the road btw ;-)
It has modified exhaust (no cats) and modified ECU. Owner said its pushing about 240hp.

Price is about 7k €. What do you think ?

If looked after they seem to run okay, mine has 147,000miles on the clock and on original engine etc.. but the problem you will have is selling it on once you have had your fun..

You would do better to save some money for another 6months or a year and buy one with less miles purely for that reason imho..

If you intend running it into the ground then great.. but otherwise you are going to struggle to get your money back.

Mine uses next to no oil between 7500mile services btw..
