Default noisy reverse

Guys,

over the last month, my car MY00 has been harder to get into reverse, goes in with a slight clunk, and sometimes i've found it easier to select another gear before selcting reverse. The other day i went to reverse and it made a whining noise which i felt was quite noticeable, every other gear is fine, clutch feels fine. I've checked the gearbox oil, presume this was the dipstick by the turbo and it was perfectly clear (almost so clear u couldnt see any oil there) and to the full mark. Does anyone have any ideas, i've asked my local garage that have worked on my cars before (specialist with BMW, but not with subarus) but he said to just keep an eye on it over the next week. The car has full subaru history and i've had it since january, it has a years 5 star RAC warranty. The worst i'm thinking is a serious problem with reverse, needing a replacement box perhaps, if this is what the warranty company would do as opposed to just fixing reverse.

I'm trying to think of how to describe the noise better, but once clutch is fully out in reverse you can here a whining almost rattly noise far louder than you would normally hear for such a low gear or any gear for that matter.

any thoughts?

Hi
I think the reverse thing is common on MY00 cars, mine does it and has done for several months. If you pump the clutch pedal a couple of times it should go in.
I think it has something to do with the main shaft nut/bolt on the end coming loose over time.
I am not certain about this but I have read similar posts in the past.
I am living with mine at the moment, as i am thinking of upgrading the gearox.
Cheers
Jt

Jt, you are exactly right, i've just been down to SGT (subaru dealer) they test drove the car and said it is a known fault with MY97 onwards, i've been given the technical service bulletin document which describes the fault. Now i need to contact the RAC and try and get this claimed on my warranty, SGT didnt think this would be a problem.

fingers crossed
