Do not use 0W oils
I posted this also on the "which oil to use thread:
This is a technical bulletin that was faxed to me in 99. I believe that it still applies today to the turbo engines. Most of the tuners and dealers here in Switzerland recommend 15w-50 or 10w-60 for the STi 7/8/9. 0W should never be used, and 3w-30 shouldn't be used unless you drive only a few of miles a day in extrem cold weather at slow engine speeds. I my self use 10w-60 as recommended by my tuner and my dealer/mechanic. It's your choice. The following is typed word for word from the message. I scaned it and would have posted it but couldn't figure out how to insert it in my post. Anyone who wants to expain to me how it's done is welcome:
SUBARU Technicnical Service Bulletin No 1-1B-015
Please Circulate To : Service Manager/Workshop Personnel
From: John Baker, Subaru (UK) TechnicalService Department
Subject: Mobil1: 0W-40 Engine Oil
Applicable Model/s: All Subaru Turbo Models
Subaru UK technical department have recently been receiving a large number of queries from both the Subaru Dealer Network and Subaru Turbo Owners, relating to the use of Mobil 1 0W-40 engine oil and the companies official policy regarding it’s use in our 2.0 Turbo engine.
The only engine oil specifications we would recommend for use in the 2.0 turbo engine are oil grade API classification SG, SJ, SH, SAE viscosity 10w-30, 10w-40. Using a SAE 5w-30w or lower viscosity for the turbo models is not recommended, as stated on page 10-14, 10-15 of the Impreza Owners handbook A1790GE page 10-14, 10-15.

I know a successful rally team that only uses 5W-30 oil but they change the oil after every event. ie every 200 miles. In the quest for big numbers on the rollers I ran an expensive high grade 5W-30 oil and I expect it was worth a few BHP but my experience and observations with this oil was such that I would never use it again. Pitty as I have a case of the stuff.
With Cosworth pistons and 15W-50 Motul 300V the car uses a litre every 1,000mls or so. I was shocked to find that after a spirited return trip of about 320mls to Scotland, I had to add 1.5 litres of 5W-30. After changing back to 15W-50 consumption was back to 1litre per 1,000mls which i consider acceptable on a highly tuned engine.
I will be sticking with Motul 300 V 15W-60 or BP 10W-60.
