Question Plated rear diff or suretrack?

Which is best guys...plated rear diff to fit a JDM box or suretrack rear?

I know details of suretrack and what it does but don;t know what the plated item will do on the uk roads.

From: Leeds - It was 562.4bhp@28psi on Optimax, How much closer to 600 with race fuel and a bigger turbo?

what can you find??

You need a 3.9:1 so what can you get.. personally I would pay <100 quid for a sport diff and add an lsd to it.

Question

David,

Do you know anyone that stocks the 3.9:1 plated? I'm also maybe thinking Quaife ATB but not sure if that will fit correctly.

Do you think suretrack diff is better than a plated diff though?

If you're intending to insert the diff unit (plated or SureTrac) into your existing diff housing, then you don't need to worry about the ration - just swap your existing CW onto the new diff.

I recently fitted a plated rear along with a JDM 6MT, it is now rear biased exiting corners....which is nice

Didn't know that could be done Richard. So the size of the std wrx housing doesn't matter with suretrack kit. I thought the STi7/8 rear diff had bigger housing?

So Richard you say that a R180 housing "accepts" a R160 rear differential?
I am going to fit a Quaife R160 rear on my standard WRX03 and as have seen on Subaru Fast CD all MY from 93 to 2004 have the same rear diff and drive shafts so it should fit without mod except new roller bearings.

phase 1 ( >98 )and phase 2 (<98)are differents.
lock rings on the drive shaft are not at the same place

LOL Theo, no! You (AS too) still need to match up the r160/r180 diff unit for your housing type. Sorry, should have mentioned Changing from r160<->r180 is a good deal of hassle requiring driveshafts and (I assume) hubs to match.

Also, I had to modify the housing a bit to get the plated unit in - had to grind a couple of bolt moldings down a bit (and then use sealant on re-assembly).

Beryllium - do you mean where the rear dive shafts clip into place within the diff unit? I fitted an STi v3 diff unit into a (I guess) Sport rear diff housing. The stock phase 2 (my00) driveshafts 'clicked' into place as normal. They still needed effort to remove as well (forgot to grease the oil seals ).

In my standard WRX03 Richard the rear R160 housing and driveshafts are the same with yours (diff part number: 38421AA020 - diff roller bearings: 806340080) so I am sure the Quaife unit will fit perfectly without any modification as fits on MY00 cars, sorry you misunderstood, I am not going to fit a R180 type.

Yep - misunderstood. I also think it'll fit no problem (but depending on size of the Quaife you might also need to modify the housing).

By the way Richard could you tell me what short of difference the uprated TMIC does to your car (when firstly fitted it - before STI gearbox) as I am going to try a STI8 TMIC in my WRX03 and the full Scoobysport exhaust already reduced my max boost to 13,5 psi (standard car 14,3-14,5psi!!!)?
Better spool up, throttle response, what exactly?

The full exhaust reduced max boost?! The APS I fitted to mine was much less restrictive, giving earlier spool and wild overboost until I corrected for it.
