Default Water Spray. Water and methanol????????

Hi All I am planning to make a home made IC water spray kit.

I have all the parts and am happy with fitting it all. So why am I posting a question I hear you all asking.

I have heard that using a mix of distilled water and methanol will get the best cooling results.

Does anyone have any idea of what percentage mix I should be using? I don't want to end up with it all catching fire . Or is it a dirty rumour I should just forget about and just use water?

Thanks in advance for you help.

Ade

50:50 water to methanol but your car has to be mapped for it and once you start using it you have to stick to it. Consistent mix. An alternative to octane booster. Run out of it and not know, continue to drive on high boost, goodnight Vienna.

i asked a similar question to a chap with exoerience in maintaining various rally cars about this. he said to use freah water and to have a filter on the headertank you plan to use.
sack some octane booster in as Harvey suggests.

Harvey It's an Intercooler spray I'm making not water injection... I don't think you need a re-map for water spray???? I've got a inlet temp sensor in the I/C so it should respond accordingly.

Does the methanol really smell that bad when sprayed over the intercooler? I heard the only problem was use to much and it can catch fire!

I might have to just start with water and go from there.

Have you ever had a water pipe burst and the smell comes in the car,

it reaks!!!

This will cause the same kind of smell, I went dizzy when it happened to me!!

Good point! Fair enough, water it is.

Damn good idea about the filter though. Save me thousands in distilled water.

Ade I am a dunce and need reading lessons. Don't think you will notice the difference running methanol on the intecooler over straight distilled but my experience with tap water was that the carbonates could clog the nozzles if you were in areas of high chalk etc.

No problems Harvey. I not known for my accurate reading skills either.....lol

I think I'll just go with distilled water and maybe venture as far as a couple of ice cubes if I take it to the pod...

Ade: For that sort of thing you can take a cool box full of ice packs. Keep the bonnet open as much as possible to disipate heat and pack ice and packs round the throttle body for a bit before you line up for a run. Some guys take fire extinguishers and give the intercooler a blast of CO2 prior to the run. Pretty cool. .... if you pardon the pun.

I filter my own water like I do for the rest of my water for drinking, coffee, iron etc... and any time I need cleen water, through a Britta filter. I don't know if you have it available up there but it works great and the kettle stays absolutely cleen, no calc deposits what so ever as long as you change the filter monthly, so it must work fine with my IC.

No Secret about the water spray.

It was on here a while back but I've never quite got around to putting it all in...

My car is an MY96 so has the headlight spray feature but even before getting morrettes I never used it so......

Went to local scrappies bought a washer bottle complete with pump (cost about a fiver) Bought a non return valve and some hose and a T piece. Then a friend got me a couple of spray nozzles and thats it. All you need to do is extend the wiring from the headlight spray pump to your intercooler spray resevoir (nova washer bottle LOL) pump. This gives you a nice dash mounted button to control it. Then just run the hose from the tank to the intercooler put your non return valve in so you don't have to wait ages fro the water to get to the I/C. Tpiece the hose to two spray nozzles position nozzles so spray is over the I/C close bonnet and enjoy.

This is a very simple run through so if anyone says you didn't mention filling it with water or any other such sarcastic comments I'm not listening

My only concern at the moment is that the pump won't be high enough pressure and will just squirt the water rather than spray it.

Will be testing the set-up tonight. Could well be after a recommendation for hi-flow pumps tommorrow.....

is it necessary to use distilled water or is this overkill? Never had a clogging problem in 3 years with tap water and mines permanently on auto. Have to fill the tank every other day.

If you have 200 quid spare you could have one of the Nitrous/CO2 coolers found here.
