Question Gearbox noise?

My gearbox is getting increasingly noisy (UK MY94, 78k). I asked the local dealer (Adams, Aylesbury) at the last service and they just said it was noisy but it seems excessive to me. If I hold the gear lever and move it a little in each gear the noise changes but is still loud. It is only noisy under acceleration.

Any ideas what the problem is or is it just a new box, could it be anything but the box?

Thanks.

Default Me too...

95 UK turbo with 100k... In 2nd there is an obvious whining noise which varies with wiggling the gear lever. Seems ok in other gears tho'

Mine has just started rumbling, it sounds like the heater fan is ticking on something while driving off boost. Clutch in and sound goes.
Found out today it was a gearbox bearing !!! Looks like its a few hundred quid to take it out and a few more to repair it, plus parts

MY94 with 130K (!). Mine has been making a noise for a couple of years now, only notice it in 4th. Push the stick slightly to the side, it (almost) goes.
From very vague memory, it is, or could be, something to do with a worn rubber bush on the linkage mechanism. Just never got around to replacing it.

Thumbs up

Changed the oil in my gearbox at the weekend, I had a crunch when going from 3rd to 4th. had done it for ages, anyway changed the oil to syntrax and now the change is as smooth as a baby's bum !! no crunch, selection feels smooth.

NM mine is exactly the same as yours, I was told either lay shaft in the gear box? or the bearings either way new gearbox on its way.

Darren What MY is yours ? and what milage ?

Mine is a UK MY98 with 60k miles and just recently running at 311BHP. Looked at getting a stronger STi box but was told the bearings are the same as those in the UK cars! Not sure if its wear and tear or my performance hike that has caused the problem

Dont want to fix the bearing only to find out it will go again in a few months !

Been offered a UK MY94 box with lots of miles for £100, if it fits it will be the cheaper option but dont know if it will last !

Not sure about performance as I think Harvey is using the standard STI box on his if there the same bearings then there should be no issue. Ive got 143k miles on mine so putting it down to w&t on mine its a MY95 uk turbo.

Question So what do I try first?

OK lots of advice and potentials there! Is there a cheap option to try first, I guess it is the gearbox oil but is there an obvious (and DIY) mechanical fix to try first and if so what do I need to do it?
