Question Intercooler upgrade?

This has probabily been asked a million times already but i can't find the helpful 'search' mode any more!!

Can anyone recommend a suitable upgrade of TMIC for a MY93 WRX,as i have the standard slanty type.I can recall an article about someone modifying a late one to fit (possibly an STI one)...i don't want to go down the FMIC route as yet.

thanks

steve.

Just bought an my99 big topmount for my my92 luckily it already had some hoses setup for me as it came off somebody elses car that had this mod.

It was a sod to fit, it even touches the bulk head but it did fit eventually.

I paid 190 all in for ir and the later style scoop funnel.

I can tell you this - do it asap, the power curve on my car now has blown me away, it pulls like a train past redline and it is the best money spent on my car so far.

Man am I happy.

Also with a td05 and this large topmount the car will be good for well over 330bhp.

I'm hoping to do this mod shortly.

I'm sure I read on here that someone was doing a ready made kit for it. Anyone remember this?

I'll send you some pics when I get home tomorrow m8.

Must just add that some monitoring is indeed needed as I have started to occasionally hit boost cut now.!!

Must be running some boost now eh?

like Nick says, its a tight fit. this is due to the throttle bodies on the earlier cars sitting near the bulkhead.

if you don't mind buying new - it may be worth looking in Scoobyshop for the APS or BPM TMICs... unsure if they cover the early classics as i only ever looked for FMIC, but they are there @ approx £500/£600+.

personally i'd rather (and have) purchase a 2nd hand FMIC for the same, maybe less money. only problem was that it was APS and needed bumper mods to fit (the bonus for me was that Scoobclinic are doing my front end at the moment so they have done all the FMIC work at the same time).

i believe MRT (Australia) do TMICs also. Worth a chat with Mike a Scoobymania regarding these (i think he supplies them).

Nick,

your results sound great - chuffed for ya. i'm hoping for a great increase in performance myself with FMIC.

i managed 295hp/264lbft out of a crummy old 220hp WRX auto engine at 1.3bar (i was told it was an STi 3 by the garage that fitted it ) - needless to say it didn't last long. the spec included:

440 inj
piper-x
full decat (open neck dp)
uprated fuel pump
adj. fuel reg @ 3.4bar
Scoobyecu (custom map)
TD05
std.. slanted TMIC (with damaged fins).

what is your spec?

i now can add to the above a geniune STi 2 ra engine and APS FMIC with relocated piper-x for cooler air induction & custom located forge VTA . when run in and remapped i'll be interested to see the RR figures.

Kev

I fitted a MY99 I/C to a mates MY95 WRX.

I had to take 1/4" off the inlet and I/C pipes so that it fitted with the bulkhead. It was still a tight fit.
Because the slanty I/C only has a single inlet and the MY99 has 2, I had to make a "Y" piece up (thogh you can buy these off a MY97> STI.
You may have to trim some of the bulkhead/engine stabiliser bracket or sit the I/C at a slight angle to clear it.

Obviously you need to blank off the std MY99 dump valve mounting with a stiff plate

Then a couple of bits of Samco and a little trimming of the old stuff and it should fit.

I you buy a Samco kit for a UK MY97> you can use the MY99 DV on the I/C and you wouldn't you have to make a "Y" piece

Cheers for the info Dyney....so basically i need a MY97> hose kit and a MY99 intercooler then.
Is the UK 99 larger than the UK 97 ?? or do i have to find a STi one.
I am using a Bailey motorsport VTA at the moment...will i still be able to use it?

steve.

If you use a MY97/8 I/C (with the DV take off pipe) you will be able to use your DV but you will need the Samco kit for a MY97/8.
If you go with a MY99/00 I/C then you will need to use a bolt on MY99 DV or blank off the DV port and use the DV in the position you have now (So you can keep the std hose or get Samco for a pre MY97 car (the later cars didn't have the DV take off that yours does).
I'll see what pics I can dig out to illustrate my point better (when I get time)
