Transmission swap
#1
Hello,
I live in america and own a MY00 2.5 RS, and stupidly I have the automatic transmission on there. Frankly, with this the car is rather boring and not as usable, and I was wondering if anyone had swapped out the auto-box for a 5-speed. I anyone has, i would really llike to see how hard it is, and how much it would cost to do, etc. etc.,
Thanks,
Chris

yeah, I hadn't even thought about the ECU. But what i meant is there any way you think it could be done for less than like $5000 or 6000 in a shop, seeing as though I don't have the correct equipment to do this with.
thanks
Chris
thanks

Yes the ECU is different and has to be changed apart from that the you will need to replace the following flywheel, pressure plate, clutch plate and transmission. And everything will bolt into the existing mounts etc.
You would need to decide between cable/hydraulic clutch systems.
Setting up the clutch system will be the biggest head ache in the swap.

Chris,
I'm pretty sure that the ECU is not different - I have a 94 WRX Auto (and have changed the ECU for a Link unit).
The ECU uses one line in to tell whether it is auto or manual - this wouldn't be necessary if they were different units.
The gearbox is controlled by the TCU.
The easiest and best way to do this is sell the car and buy a manual one. The expense in swapping the gearbox (and drivetrain components) makes it impractical.
If you have the money burning a hole in your pocket, buy a Legacy twin-turbo half cut and transplant that in there - cheaper and no more boredom!
