VF30
Hi guys.
The rage downunder is still the VF22!
There is a bit of interest in the VF30 as i subscribe to a WRX Group down here as well.
Any one of you know how the VF 22 compares to the VF 28 in the STi V5/6...Size wise, as ive been in a Rex fitted with one, + exhaust and intake and it pulled as hard as my STi!!!!!

Guys, could one of you explain the difference between all these types of turbo as i haven't got a clue!
My RA has a VF29 which suffered from terrible Lag (especially when really going for it!)originally - but has been cured beyond beleif by simply fitting a K&N panel filter?!

Hi Adam,Yes mine's A Ver6 Ltd - one of ten sold by Ian Shiptons (Your's included?).
I've not changed the exhaust myself but Mr Shipton had a Prodrive(i beleive) BB fitted when he was running it.
You've got me thinking though, as i had the K&N fitted at service (GGR in Leicester) and they could have made some other adjustment at the time.Either way the Lag has just about dissappeared!

Dave,
I'm not sure, but I think the lower the number of these VF series turbos, the larger the turbo is. So the VF22 is the largest, but with more lag and the VF30 would be the smallest turbo, but with less lag.
Cheers,
Wrexy.

Just out of interest, the sizes do not follow the numbers exactly...
A VF22 is quite "big" and is also quite laggy, sadly it is also quite fragile. A VF23 flows less air but has the same exhaust housing (so the exhaust A/R ratio is the same); its impeller is much stronger than the '22.... the VF24 goes to a P18 exhaust housing and spools up more quickly than either the 22 or 23 but doesn't quite flow the same. A VF28 is very similar to the VF24. The VF29 has a different compressor and is a bit more efficient. The VF30 (according to the info I have) bucks the trend and actually flows more than the VF29 (and by the same token the VF28 and 24), it also has a smaller (than VF22/23) exhaust housing, so it should spool up well, yet flow signigicant volumes of air....
Cheers,
Pat.

Top thread, and Pat - we're not worthy.
Now when the subject of fragile IHI's is discussed I've got a Q for U Pat.
Would it be a Bad Thing (tm), or maybe even a Very Bad Thing (pat. pend.) to remove the BOV with a VF24 on my euro MY00 scoob?
I've got a few odd problems with my forge atmo, and the stock one doesn't like 18 psi's.

Cheers

Guys,
Like Pat says, the VF30 will flow slightly less than a VF22, but should flow more than the VF23. It should also spoolup pretty quickly due to the smaller P18 exhaust housing, BUT,
There is another MAJOR difference between the VF30, and other VF series turbos....it's NOT a ball baring turbo, it uses a 360deg' sleeve baring.
This "should" be a VERY strong turbo, similar to the TD series, but because of the much later designed compressor technology, should still spool up quickly.
Mark.

Thx all
Pat knows his turbos, eh?
Well i think its VF30 time as when I explained the hybrid VF22 with P18 exhaust housing a tubo specialist told me that for the specs im after Vf30 comes very close. Is it a bolt on job i wonder replacing my TD04?
