Default VF30 turbo characteristics

Hi

I am trying to find information about the IHI VF30 turbo. I need to know:

At what rpm can it be mapped to start to spool ?
At what rpm can it be mapped to have fully spooled up ?
What boost it can be reliably mapped up to and what is the minimum rpm needed for it to make this boost ?
What boost can it then hold to the redline (8000 rpm) ?

This is on an MY01 JDM STI with panel filter, full decat and walbro pump. Standard headers and uppipe. AF481-7546 ecu.

Also, does anyone have a compressor map for this turbo ?

Many thanks

Ken

Hi Ken

I can give you some info based around a VF34, which is identical in terms of wheels and housings but has roller bearing CHRA rather than divided thrust bearings. Because of this it may spool a little earlier than the VF30 (but not much).

On standard headers and up-pipe it started to produce useful boost from 2000rpm, 1 bar available at 2850rpm, I run 1.55 bar on high boost setting, 1.3 bar is achievable at 3000rpm, 1.4 bar at 3500rpm (limited by surge in my case), 1.55bar 4000-5500rpm, 1.4bar 6000rpm, 1.3bar 6500rpm, 1.2 bar 7000rpm. The boost naturally tapers at the topend, probably because it is flowing its maximum in my application (MAF peaks between 5500-6000rpm then stays constant to 7000rpm) Don't know what it would hold to 8000rpm, but probably 1-1.1bar.

IHI don't release their full flow maps, but here is one based around what is known/available

Thanks Simon

That is some really useful info, if there's not much difference in spooling between the 2 then my vf30 will probably be ok, that saves me a few quid !

What sort of torque and power outputs are you getting with them boost levels ? Is your car a similar spec too ?

I tried the link but got a forbidden message, I don't know if it is to do with me connecting from work or there's something wrong.

Cheers

I think it'll be the firewall at your work preventing you looking at naughty pictures.

I have an MY99 UK turbo model so lower rpm ceiling and will probably restrict things a bit at the topend due to milder cams and heads. On the other hand I have ported headers and up-pipe and an induction kit, and hyperflow TMIC. I still use the standard turbo inlet pipe which probably will limit the topend a bit on this turbo as I think this will push it towards the choke line at high airflow.

On high boost I see peak IDCs of 93% at 6500rpm and 11.2:1 AFR and 4 bar differential fuel pressure with 440 injectors. Someone clever can probably guesstimate the bhp from that, but I expect it's near to the maximum the turbo can support. It's also mapped for optimax plus NF 1ml/L. Somewhere between 330-350bhp I expect, but have no evidence to back that up

Simon

PS Torque is certainly over 300lbft because I've already wrecked 3rd gear in one gearbox and the replacement (apparently stronger) gearbox is starting to complain a bit

Simon,

I'll be getting a VF34 on my MY99 soon, with supporting mods, including ported and wrapped headers and of course a remap (BRD). How did you find the car compared to the std TD04. Obviously itll be more powerful, but did drivability suffer?

Best wishes,

Ns04

I felt driveability improved because spool-up is more progressive, rather than nothing then full boost with the td04.

1.3 bar is the sweet spot for this turbo I think, as you then get a flat torque curve from 3000-6500rpm. For a turbo-diesel feel 1.5 bar is good in the midrange, but the relative drop in torque above 6000rpm leaves you wanting more. Either way it holds torque above 5000rpm much better than the td04, but loses out by around 500rpm in terms of spool-up.

Hope this helps.

Simon

Ps budget for a replacement gearbox if you run 1.5 bar midrange.

Simon

I'm going for 1.4 bar midrange, tapering to 1.1 at the redline. I think that should be achievable and safe with my car. Gearbox is 6 speed so I'm guessing it will be ok. It's already overboosting to 1.4 bar in places (standard map is 1.3 bar) so must have been doing that if not more since I got it and I've done 15000 miles in it. I am more interested in being able to bring the boost in earlier and at lower throttle than it is now than being able to get much higher boost than now. I still can't access the link even from my own pc but I think I have enough info to be going on with.

Thanks again

Ken
