Knocklink on Rev Limit
Is it normal for a Knocklink to go ballistic when you hit the rev limiter?? Is the sensor just picking up noise from the engine hitting the limiter and not det???

It depends on your definition of "ballistic". A red light isn't particularly good at any time. However, the greens and ambers can indicate engine noise rather than det, but it all depends on how the lights illuminate.
If you get a flickering 1st green, then flickering 2nd green, then flickering 1st amber, and finally flickering second amber, flickering progressively as the revs rise, then it probably is just engine noise (although personally I'd still be concerned if I was getting ambers).
If however, you only get flickering greens as the revs rise, but then all of a sudden greens, ambers and maybe red (a "spike") then I'd be very concered, whatever the revs were.
What MY is your car? JDM or UK? What modifications? What fuel? Any octane booster...?

I get a red sometimes if I slam the gear in from 3rd to 4th at high revs and you get that clunk sound. It happens right on the gear change while I'm in neutral. I believe it picks up the clunk sound. I don't think it's det. If I change a tad smoother I don't get lights at all.
Cheers,
George.

Imagine you are sitting at fast roundabout the road is wet you are waiting to turn left then you spot a gap and floor it, the wheels spin in first and you hit the rev limiter then wham all the lights [inc red] flash at once...
It all happens so quickly in first gear all the lights come on together as opposed to a gradual build up to red.
Surely this is not det just the engine hitting the limiter? It doesnt normally light up the KL if flooring it in first just when I hit the limiter???

TBH, i think you have pushed your ecu as far as its going (well acutally beyond where its going ) and now its time for a remap (again me thinks) as you are getting det on your engine.
The highest you want to see in reality is 2 greens, anything above aint really good....
What have you added after you had the link fitted? and what was the link originally mapped for (fuel and mods)
Tony

The car was mapped recently with all the above mods, LL activity is normal.
So are you guys saying then that if you hit the rev limiter you dont get any activity on your KL ?

I tend to change up at 6000rpm at the very most, and only ever get greens. MY00, H&S downpipe and silencer, K&N panel filter, dawes @ 18psi, standard AE802, BP Ultimate + Millers. The only time I've ever seen more than greens was when I was forced to fill up with Texaco UL (this was before I started using OB, and the boost was at 15psi). And it was christmas tree time from 3,500rpm upwards...

Ok my spec is -
MY00
AE801 ECU
Full Scoobysport Decat
Green Cotton Air Filter
Forge VTA Dump Valve
Running on Optimax
My first green light normally glows dimly most of the time.
2nd green then 1st orange then light as revs increase towards limiter (in 1st & 2nd)
On limiter sometimes get 2nd orange
Last 2 days on gearchange on the limiter in 1st & 2nd from a standing start (not racing, just leaving the motorway toll booths quickly) the red light has lit.
How many others sometimes see this red light on gear change ?
I've assumed the gradual rising of the LED's is increased engine noise & normal but beginning to worry now.
WOT whilst on the move in 3rd, 4th, 5th doesn't produce any KL activity.
KL set to max sensitivity - mounted under IC in normal place.
Dawes AFR shows blue light (rich)
Boost is ~15psi.
Car gave 246BHP ar Powerstation last time it was on RR.
Would an uprated fuel pump help ? I assume not if AFR shows rich.
Advice please
Cheers
Mark

I guess some engines are noisier than others, which doesn't help when comparing like for like! I think the only way you're gonna prove whether it's det or not (other than using det cans) is to stick a bottle of Millers in on your next fill-up. If it still does it, then it's probably not det. If it stops doing it however, then you know the extra timing the AE801 runs compared to the AE802 at high revs/load, is causing a problem...

Is it happening while changing gear or before? In my case it's as soon as I put the gear in. If it's the same for you, I reckon it's the clunk from the gear change. The sensor is mounted at the back of the engine right next to the gearbox. It could easily pick up this noise. I've heard of cases where the sensor can even pick up noise off a vibrating heat shield.

Millers in, fresh tank of Optimax
Lets see what happens tomorrow.
Incidently much less throttle required to get the AFR to show rich on full tanks than on empty
New fuel pump
