I've had this won't start thing periodically in a couple of Scooby's now. I find if the engine is turning over but won't fire - pressing the accelerator full down & holding it there normally works. Be ready to let the accelerator up as soon as she begins to fire up though!!!!
I asked my dealer about this when I had my original MY97 Turbo & was told that it is one of the "quirks" of a Scooby ownership. Have spoken to a number of other Scoob owners who have also experienced this phenomenon (brief X-files speak there).
Cheers

Gadge,
I get exactly the same problem with my 98 UK spec. Probably about once a week it turns over but doesn’t fire. Try again and all o.k. Not the imob as the engine doesn’t turn when its activated.

Maybe the airflow sensor has a problem which only happens occasionally. You could try cleaning it with carb cleaner or contact cleaner.
I have two Subarus and I have never had this problem with either, and this is the first I have heard of this.
Other options that will cause this problem.
Coil pack on its way out, the spark plug leads or the spark plugs.
The incorrect gap set for the spark plugs.
Ignition timing is out.
But most likely to be Coil pack plug leads or Spark plugs or MAF sensor.
