Thumbs up

O.M.
Jack up the rear of the car so that the offending wheel is clear of the ground and grab it at either side. Try and rock the wheel from side to side (pull it backward and forward) to see if there is any play, if there is you may be able to repack with grease and tighten it up. This may work (I have done this on escorts etc) but on a Scooby the best bet is to replace with a new one. After all you don’t want it to fail when giving it some warp speed.

Failing this pop into your local garage and ask them to give it a quick check, but make sure you are there so they can demonstrate it to you.

Cheers

Just looking for a bit of enlightenment really..

I've done plenty of searches on this subject and was looking for more input.

My 95 WRX has developed a droning noise from the rear, I've managed to pinpoint the area to the Near Side Rear corner.
A while back the NSR Caliper seized up and I didn't notice for 4-5 days, the heat of it was immense. I replaced the Caliper Piston seals & boots and all is o.k. now.

I'm wondering if the heat from this has caused the grease to dry out in the Bearing ???

The noise is more noticable at around 50mph under no acceleration, and moresoe with weight in the rear.

What's the best way to check if my Wheel Bearing is FUBAR ?

All help is greatly appreciated.

I checked with my usual garage and they say it's gonna cost £125 inc VAT & labour.

the rear wheel bearings are non adjustable if it's groaning thn it is fubared im afraid the main cause on our uk spec subarus was the driveshaft goes rusty where the seal sits so water and muck can go past the seal. subaru brought out a speedy sleeve you knock over the rusty part and it gives the new seal (there are 3 of them) a smooth surface to run on and cures the prob never had 1 back if it's had a speedy sleeve fitted

Had the same problem last week, same wheel on 93 wrx. I'd changed the rear pads the month before so I thought the noise was just a pad bedding in properly but later found out the bearing had gone. An oil seal had gone and one side of the bearing had rusted up. The mechanic who changed it said he had done quite a few on the same wheel?? Only problem I had was getting a new one as I believe they are different to the uk ones at the back. That's what I had been told anyway. I got an ex-maindealer to sort me one out, Cost £75 for the new bearing + fitting.
