ECU error codes

When people are discussing these error codes from their ECU, what is the system involved in working out these codes? 
Is it done just after an ECU reset (a la MRT)
The reason I ask is that I am just about to reset mine (MY97) after filling the tank with 98 RON Shell Optimax.
Any info would be greatly received!!
