wrx gearbox power handling?
#1
Hi all
just wondering what a wrx my93 gearbox may be capeable of holding.
I heard that they may be abit fragile over 300bhp. is this true?
Any giving theres more BHP than this and how is it running?

Yup, most subaru 5 speed gearboxes struggle to take over 300bhp/300lbs of torque, but if your after more power from an MY93 WRX you will be looking at alot more things than say someone with an MY97 wrx due to differences in the engine.
Power wise, there are some 300+bhp wrx's out there running the normal gearbox, if you keep the torque down you should be ok though, but then you have the engine to contend with due to the extra strain your putting on it.

Ok then thats put abit of a downer on it.
Beginning to think that all the money i chuck at this car of mine is going to waste and that they not as reliable as made out to be.
THATS NOT THE START OF AN ARGUEMENT BY THE WAY!!!!!
Just having a bad run of luck with itat the moment and i spending a bloody fortune on it.
Today im picking her up with a full recon wrx box and new clutch.
I also need coil packs, boost solenoid valve, cambelt change (own choice for peace of mind even though the one on is ok-i checked!)
Need to do oil and filter, front discs and pads all round...
The list goes on, im finding it hard to keep up with....
Someone please restore my faith and cheer me up!!!!

Tony.... absolute crap about the MY93 not being able to handle as much power as a MY97. Two big things... the early car has a TD05 turbo which i'd say is good for at least 350bhp. The MY97 has a TD05 which has the TD04... good for maybe 300bhp. Also the MY93 more than likey has a closed deck block( although Harvey ahs proven the open deck is capable of some good figures ). The injectors are the same, both intercoolers need junking if going for over 300bhp (IMHO), pistons, rods etc i wouldn't say have a big enough difference to warranty your commment. So would you like to quantify that statement?? What are these engine differences you talk about?

Timmy, I have an STi V3 running 314 bhp/280 lbft @ 1.3 Bar boost.
I hill climb the car in serious competition where the shock on the trans is severe. The starts, using very soft tyres, is 5000rpm and dump the clutch, to 8000 rpm, ****** 2nd to 6500, similarly 3rd, stamp and squeeeeeze the brakes changing down through 2nd to 1st, hit the gas hard while waiting for some or all of the tyres to find grip, takes about 2 secs to settle, ****** 2nd to 6500 etc etc.
Standard box, standard clutch and I've been doing this for 2 years now, and 6000 (gentle) road miles...Impreza's are tough things.
Just put an early RA trans in the car to get some more accelleration, hope that works as well. I've always got that STi trans in reserve...
