Question

I'm after suggestions for where my current oil leak is.

I've spent the past couple of weekends replacing seals & have stopped a couple of quite serious leaks, but it's still leaking from somewhere...

I've done both rocker covers - no sign of more leaks.
Did the front crank seal - even though once I'd got everything apart, there was no sign of it leaking. Grrr.

Oil collects on the bottom of the filter (it's not the filter AFAIK) and I get a fine oil mist on the crossmember just behind the up pipe. (probably blown off the filter as I'm driving?)

I know it's not a serious leak, as I looked at the volume of oil I retrieved from the car during the change I did. More annoying than anything else.

Even daft suggestions appreciated, as long as they don't involve taking the cambelt off again!!

Thanks

Was it leaking here before you changed the crank seal?

<moves swiftly out of the area>

<calling from the other room> because that is where my crank seal leak dripped</calling from other room>

Hoping not

LOL. <shouting> YOU CAN COME OUT NOW!! </shouting>

yes, it's always leaked from here - I thought it was the crank seal leaking at first, but that wasn't the case. The area around the seal was quite clean. (I changed the seal anyway, given the car has done about 80k miles.)

Now I can't remember if I tightened up the idler pulley on the cambelt Hope I did...

You'll find out soon enough... gulp.

Have you checked the oil cooler connections?

there is a bit of pipe about 3inches long iirc which has two of those horrible pinch and release clips on them.. might be worth trying a couple of jubilee clips?

The car's done 40 (hard) miles already, so I guess if it wasn't done up, then it would have failed by now. (famous last words)

I hate it when I my memory plays tricks on me!

It's always the front of the filter that gets the oil, so it could be oil cooler pinch connectors. They don't seem to leak though. I will be trying jubilee clips just to be sure. (he says clutching at straws)

Now that the car engine has had a good clean I will have a look at lunch time to see if anything obvious has presented itself.

Get them done lazy They aren't that difficult!!

I know they aren't as much fun as remapping or fitting a FMIC

I can't move the idler pulley forwards or backwards (can just get my hand on it from the RHS cam cover) so I guess that I did tighten it up properly...

I suppose I'll have to take the whole damn thing off just to make myself sure, or I'll worry about it and not sleep or something!!

Still no sign of where the oil is coming from. Is there a seal on the oil cooler somewhere?

Could it be the oil cooler oil seal..??? i think grahamgoode sell them..

I replaced mine but found the leak to be from somewhere else..? The garage had a front crank shaft oil seal which i gave them to fit but they said it was not leaking. However i still have the leak looks to be coming from bottom/inside of the cam belt cover in the centre..??

Dan

Dan - that sounds very much like my leak. I wish I knew where it was coming from!!

Maybe they all do that, sir?

It did it before the oil change and afterwards. I always put just under 4.5 litres in, including the filter prefill... I suppose it could be that.

It seems to have stopped a bit tonight. I don't know why...

And I can confirm I did tighten the idler pulley - I had to check before it drove me mad!!
