Hello to England,
after 90.000km driving without problems, my engine MY99 has died.
Driving constantly about 6.200RPM for around 4 minutes I wanted to accelerate adn pushed the pedal to the floor - BUT: Noting happened than a little hesitation.
No white smoke, no decrease in oil pressure, even the boost pressure could rise to about 0,5 bar.
I was getting slower finding that I has an enormous lost of power.
After I stopped the engine and started it again, a blue-white cloud of smoke coming out of the exhaust, but disappeared after 10 seconds, some strange noise like missing one cylinder and I could see a few bubbles of oil falling to the street.
As I suggest that one of my pistons or something else hase been destroyed, The car stands by my dealer at the moment for a detailed analysis.
Now the question:
I am thinking about installing a STI-shortblock (Block, pistons conrods..), instead of an MY99.
Has anybody done such a job overthere?
Can somebody tell me where I can get s STI-short block in England? It's not possible to
get one here in Germany :-((
Will it fit without major problems?
Prices?
Any advices how to go on?
Thank you all for you help

Thanks Craig,
What would prefer?
Cosworth Forged pistons? Are there other alternatives concerning pistons?
Should I go for better Con Rods too?
Any advice who to contact for these parts?
Thanks

I agree with craig.
If you are going down this route now, you can choose the best options.
If rebuilding for power, look at a closed deck block. They are far stronger, and are a good starting point for strengthening the engine.
They are rarer, but I know where they can be found.
From your description though, it sounds more like a dreaded oil problem to the big ends, and I dont know whether a stronger engine would have survived that either.
Depending on how much you want to spend, there is plenty of fun that can be had.
But you need to decide if yuo are rebuilding for power or for safety. If it is safety, there are cheaper ways of doing it.
In your position, you need to build an engine anyway, I would go for a performance upgrade.

Frank my car has just destroyed a big end..in my case constant high revs up a long hill....I am convinced the small journal size (have a look ... they are tiny!)of the main big end bearings cannot take high loads at high revs for long. I will try to get more oil to the crank via a high capacity higher pressure oil pump.I will now avoid prolonged high revs. I think the new sti's have a special super slippy coating - moly-something to avoid the big ends cooking their oil.Let me know how you get on I am searching for some +10 bearing shells if you hear of any....let me know. Sympathy!
