STI8 Failing MAF sensor
#1
Hi,
The MAF on my wrx sti 8 (with 9000 km on the odometer) went dead this sunday. After trying to start the engine multiple times, i gave up and got the car towed to a workshop where they changed the unit. Now i am curious wheter or not the ECU should always sense a broken MAF and enter "limp-home" mode or not? Have you guys had lots of problems with the MAF on otherwise original cars?
I thought that they did revise the design on this unit from my00 onwards, is this a faulty assumption?
Kind regards
Daniel

If the system failed whilst driving, then yes it would go into "safe running" mode. Once the engine has been switched off, then the system shuts down and usually sets the check engine light on, showing system fault. Plus, it obviously then gives a no start engine fault to prevent further damage.

I guess Subaru may have added that "function" because so many cars had problems with the MAF giving shonky readings and them damaging the motor (in the days when the supplier was Unisia JECS). Sadly the Denso ones have been known to fail also...

Hello guys,
Thank you for your replies. It is like i suspected then. In my case, the engine died on me while driving in second gear, doing 15 mph. Trying to restart it was then impossible due to the no start engine fault.
David, thanks for your kind offer, but i got a new MAF on warranty. Hopefully this one will last more than 9 months (* LOL *).
The scary thing is that 30 minutes after MAF breakdown, i was seriously thinking about selling the scoob and get an Evo instead ;-)
Thanks again
Kind regards
Daniel
