Anyone changed the clutch themselves?
#1
Hi,
I've got a my97 and i think the clutch is on it's way out, (very high up the pedal). Anyway i have been quoted nearly £900 to change it (includes new clutch parts, labour and VAT).
Just wondered if it's worth changing it myself (with the help of a friend) or is it gonna be way too difficult.
Thanks
Iain

Howdy..
900 is expensive!! IMHO (not that it matters what i think) lol
You remove the gearbox to fit the clutch..drop the shafts..prop..
The whole job can be done in about 3 hours...

Ian,
I would get it done properly. Your flywheel may need re-machining and fitting a new clutch to a damaged flywheel wont't last very long. Sounds like you got your quote from Subaru who will probably just replace the flywheel (£300) I used a local motorsport company, but mines out of warranty.

Ian,
I have recently done the clutch myself on my wrx.If your are fairly handy with the spanners its not too bad.Remember the clutch swivel pin [behind the starter motor]You will also have to remove the exhaust[turbo flange bolts will be seized!]Also all this 2-3 hours for the job is a bit optimistic without an hydraulic lift so allow yourself a full day.Good luck!!

I haven't done it myself but since people here are saying to allow a full day, I'd say two days out of experience: It always takes at least double the time of what you think.
And: Do it yourself and do it properly. Save money and know how it's done.
Good luck!
