Could be blocked/restricted fuel filter, try changing it.

Question

Suddenly got engine cut-out - stopped- tick-over normal, but won't rev over 2000 rpm. If I hold the accelerator down, it revs to 2000, then cuts out and in, staying at 1500 to 2000 rpm. Same when driving. Cut-out is violent, ie not firing, then cuts back in and fires normally. No Check Engine warning. Anyone help? Just before it happened, the low fuel light came on, could this be a clue? Last fill up was at a cheap SUL pump in Belgium - could it be dirt in the tank?

tried changing the fuel filter - no difference. It's almost like the speedo cable has gone, but the revs cut at 1800. If I try and rev slowly through this point in neutral, it stops at 1800 and 'hunts' no matter what the throttle setting. Any ideas, please?

Question

It could be that the ECU has detected a fault, e.g. TPS sensor, MAF, Lambda, which would not necessarily show as a fault and the JECS has gone into 'failsafe' mode which will run against a basic map and cut the fuel and advance in the boost 'zones' i.e. above 2-3000 rpm.

If the fault is not showing via Check Engine you will need to hook up to a select monitor.

Cheers,

Trout

Thanks for that. I've just had the filter off and discovered it's got an ITG filter which is pretty mucky, with traces of oil inside the MAF, although it's not indicating a MAF failure as such. I don't suppose anyone knows where I can get a Select Monitor check done today? Do the RAC carry that sort of diagnostic? Problem is I'm supposed to be drivung to the middle of France in it on Thursday, so there's a bit of a panic!

Check the fuel filter in the fueltank.
You have to remove the carpet in the trunk of your car and than you find a oval plate whit 4 bolts, remove this bolts and than you find the fuel pump.
Remove the fuel pomp .
Around the fuelpump you will find also a filter , sometimes this filter is compteetly
full whit durt.
Succes

Question

Graham,

what model year is it? MY99 and later has a hot film MAF which is a bit Gwyneth Paltrow (too sensitive and liable to break down). HOWEVER, in my own experience, if the Hot Film goes, the car will not start without first disconnecting the MAF from the ECU - i.e. pull its plug out of the sensor.

At this point the car will drop into failsafe and then run up to no boost.

I am not sure about the fuel issue, sounds odd that it will run fine up to a certain rev level - the amount of fuel required is based on the load dimension, not the engine speed per se.

Bottom line is that you probably do need a Select Monitor - sorry mate.

Don't suppose this is much help....but Cats(catalytic converters)don't like missfires...unburnt fuel in cat=future demise....I know this to my cost...If you can't solve this problem my advice is not to drive the car if it's missfiring otherwise the repair bill may get a bit bigger!!!
