My MAF started to play up over Christams with a couple of occurences of un-even idle and a couple of occurences of bad mis-fires/hesitation when crawling along in traffic.

Having now fitted the new MAF (Price £68+VAT), the car is Oh so much smoother when first driven in the mornings.

Next to no hesitation/surging.....

I had thought previously that this was due to the Lambda warm up period, because running with the Lamdba disconnected also caused it to run smoothly.

However the New MAF seems to of sorted it out a treat even with the Lambda all connected up.

And at £68+VAT it's even cheaper then an O2 sensor.

Question

Hi Scott

Good to here your cars sorted.

As you know I had similar problems with mine,
I can here the excess fuel on tickover and light throttle popping
in the decat- which after lots of money and Pro sport checking it over-twice
have been told it is just slightly rich running and the decat making
it sound worse than it actualy is, runs perfect on closed loop.
They also found that octane booster is coating the plugs after 1500 miles.

What I wanted to ask was that on a scooby ECU will the new fuel map
help to stop the rich running? and will it still need Booster?

Also as you have stopped doing the chips who do you recommend
to get the chip from?

Cheers

Wayne

I have an MY00 and it sometimes suffers from "hunting" on idle, especially after a run on the motorway, when I come to a halt, the idle hunts up and down, seriously badly, nearly stalls sometimes. Also around Xmas time I had a sort of misfire/hesitancy, thought it might just have been the damp, seems to be OK at present.

Does anyone know if these are the symptoms of a faulty MAF? Is it worth cleaning it? (the MAF not the car!) The car has done 48K.

Thanks,

Martin

Classic signs of a faulty MAF. They are the same sympton that I had and it's all well again now.

You cannot clean an MY99/00 MAF.

Thanks Scott, sounds like I'd better get it replaced, especially with the forthcoming TEK3 upgrade. Where did you get it from, is it only available from a Subaru dealership or is there an aftermarket unit available?

Subaru only I'm afraid

Pt.No.22794AA010 Meter CP Air Flow
£68 + VAT

Whoever is TEK3'ing would of probably picked up that it was on it's way out anyway (I know PE charge £100 for a new MAF)

This is for the MAF Probe only not the complet assembly. You only want the Probe and don't let Subaru tell you otherwise (cause it's about £300 I think).

Got the new MAF module, £65 + VAT from the dealer in Widnes. It was a doddle to fit in a couple of minutes. The car runs much nicer now, idles better, smoother, drives better, especially when cold and the best thing is the boost doesn't drop back so much after peaking! It peaks at 1.1bar on hard acceleration and drops back to just under 1 bar now, where as before it dropped back to 0.75 to 0.8Bar. Why has the new MAF affected this so much? Does this mean it's been running too rich with the old one? I didn't reset the ECU after the replacement was fitted, maybe I should or will it have learn't by now? I've only done about 30 miles so far.
