Am I a Silly Plugger??

Can anyone tell me if the bonnet vents have any practical use?
i.e. what are the pros and cons of taking the blanking plugs out.
Does the change in air flow upset the intercooling function?
Will the electrics be killed if it rains (as it does sometimes in the UK)?
It just that the wing and top edge of the front wings do seem to get quite warm and I would have thought anything that would reduce under bonnet temperatures would be a "good thing" (with the two days that constitute a British summer just around the corner).
Or are the (non)vents just a bit of macho rally-boy aesthetic addenda??
Please direct me to threads if this has already been covered.

Try a search on this one; I seem to recall someone having trouble either at the 'ring or possibly on an autobahn as a consequence...
Sorry to be vague, but there's a warning bell ringing in the back of my head.
