Unhappy

i have a my00
it is 4 years old and has done 25k miles

the guys at prosport in manchester say that a cambelt is changed at 45k miles

Now i was under the impression that this was 4 years regardless of mileage

what do you think??

45k OR 4 years. whichever is sooner. better safe than sorry imho.

Get it changed, it's not worth the risk/cost of a knackered engine against the cost of a cambelt change. They do degrade with age as well as mileage.

The timing belt is a "rubber" one, so it will age definately, as do the alternator drive belt and air con drive. If you much prefer to spend money on an engine rebuild, leave alone, you'll find out the expensive way,no problem.

Low mileage is more of a belt killer than high mileage users as the belt does tend to retain its shape from standing, causing cracks.

Who has had, or heard of (genuinely) a belt letting go on a scoob? I've had one go on a 323i beemer but it had done 115K on one belt!. My old 420gsi turbo had done 100k and the belt looked like new! I've known numerous escorts and astra's going, but never of a Scoob!

Probably because the kind of people owning scoobs up until now are not silly and change the belts when their time is up..

Since everyone under the sun is buying the old ones now I am sure you will see lots of belt failures soon..

Escorts and Astra's have been around for years and sold in higher volume.. not even going into the build quality but treat a scoob with the same service respect as the average Escort driver and I am sure the cambelt will let you know it is beyond retirement time.

Be interested to know if there is much valve clearance.. my old MR2 Turbo snapped a cambelt at 95mph and 4500rpm.. with no damage, don't think I'll risk the scoob though.. The MR2 belt went on age, it still had 10k miles to go btw.

some MY00's have the 4 year 60k interval, slightly earlier models have 3 year / 45k intervals.

You need to check the chassis number, and IIRC an 'X' means 45k, and a 'Y' means 60k.

That probably meakes no sense at al, but Ian at Stan Palmer Subaru did a much better job of explaining it to me - might be worth dropping him a line
