I recently had a HKS decat exhaust fitted and a high flow panel filter to my MY95 WRX. The car now seems to be making a different noise, I am suspecting det but not sure if some of it is due to the turbo spooling up earlier. Can anyone confirm if the mods I have made are likely to cause det, and any likely solutions.

I am expecting some octane booster to arrive in the next day or so and am going to give that a try, but have noticed Broquet for sale in the scoobyshop, anyone know if this is a potential cure ? The text doesn't seem to say it will stop det, but does mention it is proven to improve running and allow use of standard unleaded.

The car still has the plugs in that were in it when it left Japan, does a change of plugs help with det ?

Any advice much appreciated, thanks

Ken

Chaps

Thanks for all the advice / comments. Sounds like there is a good chance the wastegate is more audible now but like alex I am still a bit wary about it and do not want to damage the engine if it can be helped.

I am going to try the octane booster when it arrives, maybe tomorrow as I'm assured it was despatched, and see if that makes the noise go away. I did not have any noise at all before the exhaust change, car ran really well just on SUL. I think this probably rules out the wastegate spring, but could be useful to know this is something that can cause similar symptoms.

Phil - my car is a silver WRX with no stickers on the boot. I am surprised we haven't passed each other before now as I too am in Gt Sankey, near to David Lloyd centre. I'm not going to the northern meet, but maybe we could meet up some time or something. Also, do you know anywhere local that sells octane booster ? Awaiting some from Scoobymania but it's not somewhere I can just call in to being in Nottingham.

Cheers

Ken

Yeah, Ive been worrying about this sort of thing too, i have a 94 WRX/STi with a full 3" system and ITG panel. I get a sort of fluttery turbo pressure type sound under boost that i have been told is not det but am suspicious none the less, The car shows peak boost at just below 1.1 bar and holds at just above 1 bar.(unfortunatly i fitted the guage the same time as the exaust+ filter so ive no idea what it used to be!) I have been advized to always use octane booster, always.
Broquets are not an octane booster, and it certainly will not increase 95 octane to the 100 octane minmum that these cars were built to run on. I think they may have benefits though, which is why im getting some for my car (which ill use as well as SUL and octane booster for extra margin)
Im going to get a knockink as soon as possible though, cause suspicion is getting the better of me!

Guys, I had this futtery noise with my 93 WRX. Since I fitted the Broquets it has gone. It sometimes comes back but only for a short while when giving it a good ******* down a back road. Could it be that you can hear the turbo spooling up now, with the new exhaust? I hear a lot more noise with my Scoobysport dp. Hope this helps a little. Mark

That fluttery sound your talking about is probably just the wastegate regulating boost.

I noticed it too after I fitted the Scoobysport DP.

Ken,

It's more than likely just the wastegate you can hear. My MY93WRX has a BPM Twin Dump downpipe which really lets you hear the wastegate sound (regular pulses as boost builds)It also detted once when bad fuel was put in(Knocklink fitted). This sound is more of a mettalic whisp/tinckle i also felt the det as the car looses a fraction of power.

Phil.

P.s Ken,
A fellow scoobynetter from Warrington!!!! What colour is your car? I dont think i've seen it? Mine's an STI v3 TypeR in Sonic Blue, usually around Gt. Sankey/Penketh.
Are you going to Northern Meet 5?

Going slightly off subject: If I get the whispy sound a lot could it be that the wastegate has a weak spring in it and its slightly leaking?

Ken,

I did get some from DRB (near padgate) it was valvoline i think, but only tried one bottle.

I got some STP stuff, through work, and have got a couple of bottles left. I think i'll try millers next.

I'll keep an eye out for you.

Phil.
