My 93 WRX arrived in Southampton this week & was supposed to have passed its SVA. Unfortunately it can't pass the emssions test, the reading never settles down & is very irratic. The import company say it needs to be taken to subaru dealer to run a full diagnostics, but local dealers have told me to get lost.
Got to collect the car & trailer it to my local garage who are gonna service it & see if the CO reading comes down.
This guy has a little scooby exerience but can anybody give me some pointers to the cause & what needs to be done to rectify the situation.
I live local to Tunbridge Wells, Ive not seen the car yet but it appears standard apart from a sports rear box. Reading was ok @ last service @ 15k ago. The cars mileage is @ 55k.
This as you might of guessed is my first scooby.
Thanks Mark

Hi Mark,
You will probably find that the O2 sensor has failed.I have changed quite a few on early WRX's seems to be a weak point on them, probably due to their location.
If it is the sensor just make sure that once the new one is fitted that the cat has "lit up"i.e up to operating temps .I have also seen lazy cats which would not operate properly when being tested using MOT methods(take it down the road and give it a good thrapping )
Hope this is some help
Steve

Sorry for being so dense but are the O2 sensor & lamba sensor the same thing.
Where can I buy one & whats the usually cost.
I persume that I might as well change the sensory if it is the weakest link to avoid trouble in future ?
Thanks Mark

Sorry to hear about your problems.
Why are you rushing around to sort it?
Are the importers supplying & selling the car or simply as agents to transfer it over here?
If the former, tell them its in their court and don't pick the car up from them.
If it is down to you to remedy the problem then you can do a diagnostic yourself. If the fault code memory is read (doesn't need to be a Subaru garge to do this), it may show what is screwed. I believe that if the o2 sensor is not working then it should show up.
This test ( and others ) can be found on

Dont worry mark!!! I have a 94wrx in which failed the emission test when the garage mot'd it before I bought it. After very heavy fuel consumption I had the emisions tested at a different garage only to see the co level was 6.89% it should be < 0.30%!!! I believe my lamba sensor is knackered so waiting for the garage I bought the car from to shift their **** and fix it!!! Il keep you updated with my result and let you know if that was the problem!!!
