Castrol Magenetec oil
#1
My dealer's been putting Magnatec oil (10w40 I think) into my MY00 turbo at the 1000 and 7500 mile services I've had so far. Is this a good enough oil? Or should I be insisting on a fully synthetic?
Also, what's the popular vote for an additional oil change between services?

Scoobysport were using it when they were temporarily out of stock of Silkolene, so if both they and SUK use it, it can't be that bad.
I would stick to it with your top ups too.

In my previous motor (Mondeo Si) I tried all sorts -- Magnatec, Mobil 1, Halfords Synth, Valvoline Synth, etc etc. They all gave identical consumption rates (i.e. used no oil AT ALL until exactly 7,000 miles, then used about 3/4 of a pint until the scheduled 12,000 change) and I noticed no difference in running etc. So its obvious that the oil's losing its properties at around 7K.
Obviously Scoobs run hotter and put more stress on the oil but as long as its rated API SJ, at least semi-synthetic and the right viscosity then it's fine.
FWIW Saab's own-brand "Turbo" oil used by the dealers in all cars is a semi-synth.
