Question

I have just fitted a K&N induction kit to my MY99 UK car and I have come across a little snag.

There is a 1/2"o/d rubber hose that connects from a plastic cylindrical cannister ( just the left of the radiator) to 90 degree section of the airintake rubber bend just after the MAF.

When you fit the K&N there is no place to fit the abovementioned 1/2" hose, so I have just left it venting to atmosphere.

The car seems to run OK except it stutters at 4000 RPM when you drop down from 5th to 4 th and accelerate.

I am wondering if it has anything to do with the hose not being connected.

Does anyone know what the plastic cannister thing does?

I would be grateful if anyone can help me with this.

If it is the same as a my97 the pipe connects into the 45 degree bend you get with the kit, on mine there is a small hole in the bottom of it and is a very tight fit,
hope this is the pipe you are talking about

This canister is for emissions (fuel vapour I believe?). leaving this hose off shouldn't give any problems. On the new car the canister is mounted somewhere near the fuel tank I think.

Thanks for the replies guys

Paul, thanks for that info. Do you know if leaving this hose off could cause the stuttering I mentioned?

Simon, the 45 degree bend in my kit only has one hole which is for a breather hose about 1" o/d but there is no hole for the 1/2" hose from the cannister thing. How many holes are in your 45 degree bend?

Shouldn't cause the stuttering. The stuttering is more than likely you MAF sensor getting a bit of turbulence.

Paul

You maybe right. Tonight I put everything back to original but left the vent hose disconnected and it didnt do the stuttering thing, so it would appear to prove that this vent pipe (either connected or not)is not the cause of the problem.

This is strange as you would expect that K&N would have tested their products, and if turbulence was creating a problem they would have sorted it out prior to marketing it. Also I have not heard of anyone else having this problem.

Paul, is there any way to solve this? I have contacted K&N today and they couldn't offer any advise other say that they have not had any problems like this referred to them before.

Has anyone else experienced this?

I sorry to be no help really but the only induction kit that has ever worked properly for me is the one we sell

It's an STI part and if you check out a post from a wekk or two back called which induction kit you'll find all my comments in it.

It's too much for me at this hour to go into it again.

Thanks for the replies guys.

The problem of the stuttering effect at 4500/5000 eventually turned into the brick wall effect, as reported on this BBS many times before, coupled with eratic tick over at idle. I took the K&N off and reverted back to the original air box and filter set-up but the problem remained

To cut a long story short the problem turned out to be a knackered MAF sensor. Replaced this now and everything is OK

Now I am not blaming the K&N cos I know these things are tried and tested, and many of you have them, and other brand induction kits fitted with no problems, just reporting what had happened.

The supplier, ABP Motorsport, have very kindly taken the kit back and given me a full refund.

Cost me £80 from the lifesavers Grade A Subaru (breakers) 01663-744114. Over £300 from Subaru.

It was still a costly exercise
