I was wondering if you could explain this. the exact time of a standard uk MY00 from 0-60 mph and I am told that the impreza uk MY01 is faster and heavier ???? how does this make sense

It depends on who you believe. Subaru say 0-60 in 6.3 (I think) for MY99 (same as MY00). But I've seen magazines get anywhere from 5.5 to 5.03. When those same magazines tested the MY01 it was slower to 60. About 6.3 if I remember correctly.

They quote 5.9 secs -but Evo (mag) tested it at 6.0 secs dead where the old car did 5.4 secs. The quichshifted Turbo did it in 5.1 secs.

The in gear times (that really count - 0-60 is a crap measure of a cars performance) of the old car where some 2 secs quicker 50-70 in top gear. Ive got a new WRX and to be honest i dont notice the difference - but then im not comparing back to back.

Test drive rather than believing what you read. Most people dont thrash the cars like you need to to get decent 0-60 times. It'll still get you in trouble with the plod!!!

HI spr,
this months EVO, out today, has a big section comparing many variables in cars that we all consider good Clio 172-911 turbo. The my01 doesn't fare well at all, well below the 911 below the elise, below the clio 172 even below the CELICA!!.
(is that Blowdog's makinnen?)
