Question

Hi guys and girls

I have an Sti 2 Type RA and am concerned about detonation. Aside from an ECU remap and use of SUL and booster, are there other ways of preventing this horror?

I always run my car on SUL, and am somewhat short of cash for a remap.

Would the ECU reset have any effect on a Jap import in this regard?

Cheers, Mike

Question

Mike,

In the long run it would be cheaper and far more user friendly to install 2 Broquets. See

thanks Chris

Can anyone give me any input on these things if they have used them?

Currently my search facility for the bbs is up the spout.

Thanks

I have recently spoken to my local garage about fitting a charge cooler to lower the inlet charge. He has checked out available space under the bonnet and it is feasable and is at the moment checking out parts. anyone considered this route?

Been there done that..

Tried a charge cooler... top mount..front mount... most forms of cooling..

Mike,

There are allegedly four simple factors in detonation:

Amount of boost
Temp of air entering engine
Octane level of fuel
Temp of engine

The air into the engine is dealt with by the standard intercooler. You can improve on it by using an uprated top mount intercooler, front-mount intercooler or a chargecooler. None of them are cheap....

A water spray onto the intercooler can also help. The water needs to "mist" properly for maximum effect - windscreen washer pumps do not give the full benefit.

Another option is Water Injection - see

As Gavin says, the Knock Link would probably be a good idea, I have just had a Knock and Lambda link fitted to my car and it's pretty cool seeing what the engines doing. The knock link can use either the existing sensor or a special one which bolts onto the engine and listens for knock.

WRT the ECU reset I have heard that it will revert back to the original map, i.e. the jap 100RON map!

I have it on good authority that by using a Knock Link it is fairly obvious what is good at preventing detonation, i.e. octane booster visibly reduces knock etc.

ta,
Matt.

Hello there, I own 99 STI V Type R. I live in Indonesia. My car is running on Ron 92 with the following modifications to make it run pretty much like its meant to be.

Broquet Top Fueller(inline) & Broquet Intank
Aquamist Water Injection
Knocklink
Speed Delimiter
Apexi AVC Type R Boost controller (1 bar)
Mongoose Front Pipe de-cat

The car was fitted with all these mods since new. I have covered nearly 9000km with no problem. I could easily run 14.3 secs 1/4 mile @ 160km/h (verified with digital delimiter). Did a top speed run and got 242 km/h on a flat stretch of road(about 5km long). All these on 92 Ron Pee water, can't get anything better you see. I was concerned about blowing my engine up but all these mods has been properly thought out and tested. Email me if you have any more questions. Hope I have helped.

Slightly off topic...

I'm thinking of installing an Apex'i AVC-R as well. Could you tell me how you like it and how you installed/configured it?

I have installed Broquet on my own car (which also has Link ECU, Knock and Lamba). I can not authoritively state that Broquet 'raised' the 'RON' of the fuel.

It was a little smoother in running. More experienced Link users reported the same, but did not report the ability to specifically increase ignition advance, which would be possible if the RON rating was improved.

That does not mean that Broquet is a 'bad thing' - the engine is smoother and possibly a little more economical.

My advice would be to use Broquet to make your car smoother and use Millers (£2.50 per tank) to make it safe. This will raise RON by 2 and make your fuel close to original spec.

A good map is the best solution - I won't quote my advance and boost figures here as it would be deemed irresponsible, but you can get significant advance in all areas of boost, even without octane booster.

Cheers,

R

Thanks R

Damn, a £150 fix to the detonation and low-octane fuel issue would have beem marvellous.....sigh.
