Question

Can somebody offer a little advice please. I have an Sti3 V-ltd and i understood this to redline as an sti at 8250 revs, however the redline begins at around 7800 as a broken red line that becomes solid at just above 8000. Is this right??.

cheers scott

I think that the "redline" shown on the dash is to warn that you are reaching critical engine speed, ie advice to change gear. The actual "redline" probably is at 8250rpm but personally I don't know because i've never felt the need to go this high with the revs as the torque is highest at lower revs.

The redline is where the red line on the rev counter begins, hence the name. It is the rev _limiter_ that kicks in at 8250Rpm.

When driving fast, it is best to 'shift up' just before the redline, hitting the rev limiter will just slow you down.

Obtaining optimum acceleration performance is mostly about torque and gears... in a scooby, the torque will generally start dropping off significantly quite a bit before the redline, so it isn't really necessary to rev the engine quite that hard.

Of course, modified cars may well have improved torque higher in the revrange, so they may well make use of the extra revs available.
