How many others out there have had a £300 bill for a new MASS AIR FLOW METER due to contamination from the oil in the RamAir filter

Which ramair filter? The panel, or the induction kit?

My subaru garage fitted a ramair filter at my 15k service and charged me for the pleasure...

Are they no longer an approved part?

I cant get a freak'n straight answer over here as to whether or not they are still legal.

Some say they are....others say my car is unroadworthy with one.

I've had this one out on IWOC many times.
MY last car a MY99 had a MAF failure just 150 miles after fitting a Ramair filter. Again I got charged by my dealer as he didn't fit it or supply it. Fair enough I thought. It turned out that oil from the ramair got through the wrong side of the filter and contaminated/broke my MAF sensor.

Also with my new car a MY00 I had a MAF sensor failure after only 800 miles with a Pipercross induction Kit.

Ramair is no longer supplied as part of the prodrive PPP. in fact the ppp uses the standard filter.

I now use a K&N induction kit with no problems.

Paul.

Shame the search facility has gone - this one has done the the rounds several times here and on IWOC starting about 2 years ago.

Ramair's are both oily and flimsy so they knacker the MAF's by applying a thin coat of oil onto them. In the worst cases MAF sensor contamination this can cause lean running and catastrophic engine failure. The MAF sensors on the newer cars is more sensitive and so the PPP uses the standard filter just to be sure. Prodrive will not approve ANY aftermarket filter for the 2000 cars.

There were also atleast one case of the Ramair being sucked up the the air intake which had the effect of partially blocking it causing running problems, but also because it was distorted it allowed unfiltered air in too.

I don't think IM approve Ramair any more and the leading independents won't supply them - Scoobysport switched to ITG and PE to K&N anyway.

It is the Panel filter not the induction kit.I had it fitted with my s/s backbox at the 1000 mile service. After 6 months and 25000 miles i fitted a Possum Link which does not use the air flow meter so when it was contaminated i just dont know but i have done 83000 miles now and have just taken the link out to find my problem.
The ramair panel is a prodrive spare part so i have been told! Make of that what you will.
